A drunken Chinese tourist says he bit a panda who attacked him after he jumped into a zoo enclosure to "hug" the bear. Zhang Xinyan, 35, had drunk four draught beers before deciding to enter the Beijing Zoo pen belonging to six-year-old male panda Gu Gu.

The startled Gu Gu bit both legs of his intruder, who responded by biting "the panda on its back", Mr Zhang was quoted by state media as saying.

Mr Zhang said he had not realised pandas could be violent. He told the Beijing Morning Post that he had come to the Chinese capital "only to see the pandas".

"The seven-hour train ride was exhausting, and I drank bottles of beer when I arrived then had a nap," he added.

The newspaper said Mr Zhang had a "sudden urge" to touch Gu Gu with his hand, so he jumped over the waist-high railing into the enclosure. "When he got closer and was undiscovered, he reached out to hug it," the newspaper added.

Mr Zhang was bitten first on his right leg, and then on his left.

Newspaper photographs showed him lying on a hospital bed with blood-soaked bandages over his legs.

"I bit the panda on its back but its fur was too thick," Mr Zhang recalled. He went on: "No one ever said they would bite people. I just wanted to touch it."

Zoo spokeswoman Ye Mingxia said the panda was unharmed and they were not considering punishing Mr Zhang yet. "He's suffered quite a bit of a shock," she told the Associated Press by telephone.

I'm not surprised! I remember reading about a case where a guy climbed into a lion enclosure (in the UK) because he wanted to stroke the sleeping "kitties". He didn't get out alive of course. Not that pandas are nearly as violent, but they're wild animals and need to be treated with respect.

This is not too uncommon. I have heard of another incidence in the UK where one dumbass thought that by sneaking into the Lion cage he could prove his Black-Belt skills.

Poor Panda. Hope they do not act too harsh on it.

I mean a panda is still a bear (of sorts), right? No one would go into a grizzly bear's pen to try to hug it. Then again maybe they would.....

The title of this thread is :

Panda goes ape after his nap is disturbed in Members' Club Room forum

I'm very worried by this latest news flash. Is one (or more) of our members running some sort of dodgy trade in endangered wildlife? :(

To the Police station! :D

Oh my god!

This is not in the FAQ!

And in actuality, the Panda Bear is suspected to be more related to the North American Raccoon and Red Panda than to actual Bears.

Actually, recent genetic tests have shown that Pandas are really bears. They just diverged from bears long time ago. Their closest relative is actually South American Spectacular Bears. See the

Oh? Cool :D Bearz iz bearz to me, anyway. I would not have scored low points if it was, in essence, just a giant Raccoon (even though it is not).
