Pakistan looking to acquire Frigates, Support ships from Netherlands, Turkey: Admiral Afzal Tahir

ISLAMABAD, Mar 20 (APP): Pakistan Navy is looking to enhance cooperation with Netherlands and Turkey including acquisition of Frigates and Support ships, said Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir.

“We are looking forward to acquire larger platforms from them,” the Chief of Naval Staff said while talking to APP at Islamabad Airpot on Monday on return after successful visits to Netherlands and Turkey.

Besides, initial talks on acquisition of large platforms, mutual bilateral talks on future combined operations and training with Turkish Navy also came under discussion, he said.

The Naval Chief expressed satisfaction on the successful tour and hoped the visit would enhance the already existing deep-rooted friendship with Turkey and Netherlands. “I had very useful meetings with the heads of the navies of both the countries,” said Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir.

Earlier, on arrival the Chief of the Naval Sataff was received by Vice Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Mohammad Haroon, Turkish Ambassador Kemal Gur, Ambassador of Netherlands Willem Andrea and other senior naval officers.

Isn't that interesting? Interest in American Oliver Hazard Perry Class and now Turkish and/or Dutch frigates? Possible expansion of the surface fleet...or is this part of the Navy's requirement for 4 more frigates in addition to F-22P?

It's quite simple really Turkey and Pakistan have a very good relationship
both between their populations and governments especially after the election
there of an islamist party.

Pakistan is re-examining it's alliances (witness it's new friendship with Cuba) and Turkey as a candidate for EU membership will be an important ally in the future.

Pakistan and Turkey are co-operating on upgrading the Babur. Since the Babur will also have naval applications i'm not surprised that both these operations are tied together.

Better relations between Turkey and Pakistan will have enormous benefits for China particularly bearing in mind Turkey's key naval situation.

The Turkish Frigates are HDW Meko 200. Also the Netherlands LCS has been German-Netherlands joint venture

They're implying used ships and Pakistan is a poor country; if they're talking about frigates from the Netherlands - then its likely the Karel Doorman Class and not LCF. If they're talking about Turkish frigates, then they may be either looking at the Oliver Hazard Perry or Yumuz Class.

Interesting. The PN really needs another few ships for the future to accompany the Spruance, F-22Ps, and Oliver Perrys. Could someone shed some light on what the Turkish and Dutch have for export?

I guess the PN is after Dutch support and auxiliary ships - due to the sheer price of the new LCF (and Germany's supposed/claimed stance on not selling arms on Pakistan) plus the Karel Doorman Class not being available sale. As for FFGs, I'm do not know what the PN is after from these countries because I do not think any used FFGs are currently for sale.

I believe the PN is trying to expand its fleet by doubling its numbers by 2020; it would help maintain a credible deterrance against the IN and secure Pakistan's trade routes. Since Pakistan hopes to build most of the F-22P at home by 2013, it would be a good financial decision to procure at least another 4 F-22Ps; I would assume the next F-22Ps will be heavier and considerably better than the current 4. Another 8 heavy frigates are likely sought to boost the fleet with potent warships; 4+ Oliver Hazard Perry Class and another type (new or used).

I'm just hoping that by 2012 Pakistan would be in a good financial position to acquire new French submarines and frigates....but not likely. 12-16 FFGs and 9-12 SSKs + 12-20 MPAs, serious force.

I still find it curious that Pakistan would not go for the LCF.

Pakistan seems to have a major weakness in it's air-defences both on
land and sea which has been exposed on countless occasions but no
action is being taken

My bet...its simply too expensive. It would be a financially and logistically better decision to produce like 4 more F-22P (total 8); except make the later batch more advanced than the first. In addition the 8 F-22Ps the PN would likely try to procure at least 4 more FFGs which have stealthier designs like the Type-054, scaled-down La-Fayette, etc. I do not think the PN will operate specialized FFGs but rather dual or multirole FFGs.

No. At the moment there's no evidence that they're not going for the LCF
(let's leave aside certain comments from a certain person about German
involvement).

The LCF does have stealth features and it would certainly make a lot of
sense particularly bearing in mind the dutch have specifically bought
Tomahawks because of the LCF

Also i thought you might find this interesting

Pak, Dutch warships hold joint naval drills
[ Saturday, February 25, 2006 07:06:10 pmIANS ]

ISLAMABAD: Naval ships of Pakistan and Netherlands conducted joint drills in the Arabian Sea to improve anti-terrorist coordination, a Pakistan Navy statement said on Saturday.

"The joint drills conducted by Pakistan navy fleet units and the Royal Netherlands navy ship HNLMS De Zeven Provincien are part of a Coalition Maritime Campaign Plan (CMPC) force patrolling in the Arabian Sea to thwart any act of terrorism," said the statement.

The Pakistan Navy has been actively engaged in anti-terror operations in the Arabian Sea since early 2004 when it joined the coalition of international naval forces - CMCP. Both Pakistani and Netherlands navies are part of CMCP.

After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Pakistan became a close ally of the US-led international coalition against terrorism and captured over 700 foreign militants, including some top Al Qaeda terrorists, since December 2001.

Believe me, it's not quite simple like this, Turkey's and Pakistan's relationships are older and stronger than you told. Since Turkish Independence War, Turkey allied with Pakistan, and even today, most of Turkish people call Pakistan as brother/sister nation. It's not just because of an islamist related party won elections or something like that, Turkish people still owe them a big part of their existence in their hearts still.

Also, do not ever forget that, Turkey is a secular country (which means seperation of any religion or belief from it's state) by it's laws. Having a islamist-related party on goverment just a temporary situation. If they try to have a islamic law (sharia, or same things with other names) or a islamic state, or change anything for breaking Turkey's unity; Turkish nation will give response immediately against these acts.
