On Kissinger

Henry Kissinger has written a book 'On China' that is now coming out in a Dutch translation. In that context the correspondent of my Dutch newspaper NRC interviewed him in New York. The interview is published today and I present here the translation of one question and answer:

Q China is an economic world power. Do you anticipate an increase in political influence?

A Yes but not in the Western way. The American and European concept of influence means physical domination. The Chinese variant is very different. China doesn't want to place armies all over the world. China will have a bigger voice in the world but that is not the primary purpose.

This is very relevant to the way China develops its armed forces.

The Chinese, first and foremost, are concerned with their own problems. If a solution to some of those problems require a greater foreign influence, then that will be pursued as needed.

Perhaps the greatest difference between China and the United States (and Europe, to a somewhat lesser extent), is that China does not see itself as the "defender" of anything or anyone apart from itself. China, apart from the brief ideologically feverish era of the Cultural Revolution, does not seek to evangelize any part of its culture or society to the rest of the world.

I think the world have seen all kinds of feverish ideologies and systems of government already. Having said that, I don't think there is one single perfect system or ideologies as a one size fits all system. They all similarities in serving the public for the greater good by sharing resources, but differ in going about it. From feudalism, communism, capitalism, or combo of both, they all worked AND don't work because there will always be corruption and disruption of fairness when the next generation rolls around and start having their agenda NOT growing up within the environment from previous ones to understand the importance of concession and compassion of understanding the difficult balancing act of distributing resources in a today's society.
