NORAD Being Moved Out of It's Mountain Fortress

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. – The Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center becomes the Cheyenne Mountain Directorate as part of an ongoing effort to improve the operational effectiveness of the North American Aerospace Defense Command and United States Northern Command, according to NORAD and USNORTHCOM officials.

The change will better integrate NORAD and USNORTHCOM functions, tasks, missions and operations to protect American and Canadian citizens.

“I directed the formation of a team to take a hard look at the operational practices of NORAD and USNORTHCOM. I asked them to consider methods of improving our effectiveness and enhancing unity of effort,” said Adm. Timothy J. Keating, commander of NORAD and USNORTHCOM.

The study was conducted independently of the Quadrennial Defense Review, Base Realignment and Closure process, and the recent NORAD Agreement renewal.

In the next few years, some NORAD and USNORTHCOM military and civilian positions at Cheyenne Mountain will be relocated to NORAD and USNORTHCOM headquarters in Bldg. 2 on Peterson Air Force Base. The NORAD and USNORTHCOM facilities at Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station will be maintained, ready for use on short notice.

At this time, there is no intention to eliminate any jobs. The main impact on NORAD and USNORTHCOM civilian and military personnel currently working at Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center is that some will have a change of duty location to Peterson Air Force Base in the next few years.

“The change will enable the two commands to work more effectively together to fulfill their homeland defense missions, while acknowledging their distinctiveness,” said Lt.-Gen. Eric A. “Rick” Findley, NORAD deputy commander, who noted that the plan fully respects the terms of the NORAD Agreement. “Enhanced information sharing and resource sharing will result in greater cooperation and synchronization of effort.”

The change will minimally affect the local community.

The Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center is not NORAD; it is an operations center. NORAD headquarters is located at Peterson Air Force Base and NORAD has regional headquarters in the continental United States, Canada and Alaska.

Not all assets and personnel in Cheyenne Mountain belong to NORAD or USNORTHCOM. NORAD and USNORTHCOM personnel fill approximately twenty-five percent of the positions located at Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station.

The implementation plan is expected to last approximately 18 months. The plan will include a study of mission requirements, relocation of personnel and training to ensure no loss of readiness

It says that they will "maintain the Cheyenne Mountain Facility for Use on Short Notice". Yeah right, that won't work. Peterson AFB is miles away. If there's a nuclear strike on the US they're not even going to be able to move personnal inside the mountain. So what do you guys think; Am I making a big deal out of nothing or is this criminally endangering the US's defence. Not to mention abandoning the US's coolest military base.

Somebody in the chain of command is making this move probally based on the allmighty dollar. Stupid move. Really stupid. What's even more stupid is telling the whole friggin WORLD that NORAD is being moved. Whadda a bunch of stupidity.....BRAC is only intrested in dollars that it can save.

Imangine that there is a nuke strike on the US by some unnamed nation..."Gee Miggy" says Chinawhite.."What shall we blow to hell first?" Miggy replys.."First Finland then Peterson AFB USA" ..get my point? They have a target already ID'ed..I'm sure the US has done the same....War really sucks just don't make it easier for the enemey.

No Popeye, don't get so mad. We're only refocusing our mission imperative objective to further synthesuze with NORTHCOM in order to redistribuditize and good-inate the homeland defence security initiative.
I love sarcasm.

I certainly hope they have some survivable facilities at Peterson AFB. But I'm not encouraged because the article said that most of the stiff from Cheyenne Mountain was being moved to "Building Two" which doesn't sound like it would survive a nucelar war.

By the way, is Miggy banned permanantly? I don't know if I could imagine an SDF without Migleader and his...interesting viewpoints.

I love sarcasm too...

I asked the powers to be if Miggy was banned for sure. No answer yet...

Anyway in reality I just hope the powers players of the US DoD have thought this out. Maybe there are some old missile silos at Peterson AFB being turned into NORAD as we speak

:eek:ff Thanks Totoro:) ..we can't be serious all the time..I got that sarcasm from the good ole USN..If you could not take a kidding there them boys would verbally rip you to shreds...

Back on topic;
I say Peretson AFB is a good place for NORAD.. Because..I don't have a clue:confused::) Bottom line is this. They have this fortress in Wyoming..why move it? For what reason? Makes no sense to me.

Well of course NORAD had to move out of Cheyenne Mountain, the expanding STARGATE COMMAND needed more space for off world operations... ! But seriously, all defence cuts are motivated by money alone and if only they would be honest about it instead of coming up with half baked excuses so transparent they could be made of glass.

Maybe somebody real smart in the Pentagon realized the Cold War is over?

I don't know.... just a random guess.

I don't think this is a good move either. But yeah, the Cold War is over. So it's hard to justify the costs. But then again, if the Cold War is truly over, we somehow justify the costs of Minuteman missiles, and Trident carrying subs. I'm not sure of the consequences of this particular move. But my gut instinct is that Popeye's right. Some bean counter in Washington said...."Hey we could save money by doing this." With nobody debating it's negative consequences. Is it really a bad move? I don't really know. But if they gave me a say, I would have voted not to make this move.

Unless it is nothing but a giant fraud, a scam to try and distract people...but then again, I might be wrong. No one will ever know...

Seriously, why would they move a perfectly functioning station? Unless they are moving it to someplace more secure, and even then I would not say anything. Damn the cloak and dagger!
