I recall back in the day in 12/24 when the CAC and SAC 6th gens appeared there were hints of something big being cooked at Xian as well, we saw the KJ-3000 and we thought that was their surprise. But maybe that wasn't it, maybe the Xian 6th gen was delayed a bit and we're looking at it now. Such a program obviously doesn't happen overnight, it must be years in the making, it's not unlikely XAC got a contract for something, be it demonstrator or prototype at roughly the same time CAC and SAC did.It isn't at all a secret that Northwestern Polytechnical University (西北工业大学) and XAC (西飞) have engaged in extensive cooperation and collaboration, especially in aerospace R&D, for decades.
So if the aircraft captured here is indeed representative of or otherwise derived from the 西北工业大学 patent in question, then there's a reasonable chance that this aircraft belongs to XAC, and was photographed above the skies of Xi'an (西安), where both institutions are located.
If the J-50 is the more traditional evolution of a fighter aircraft (as opposed to the J-36) then maybe this possible new one could be a multirole kind of like the J-35 to the J-20? Nothing spectacular, just a good, balanced summary. It isn't written for China watchers, after all.
