light sensor help

I'm doing a school design project. it basically consists of building a robot that uses light sensor + touch sensor to do various tasks by itself.

now the problem i have is the light sensor. it's suppose to follow a black track (around an inch of thickness) on the obstacle course. the light sensor can sense black and white. so i can program it to follow the left side of the track by having the robot turn left when sensing white and turn right when sensing black.

but since time is also a part of the challenge, i want it to go straight instead of keep turning back and forth. what's a good method of doing so? and i can only use 1 light sensor.
