Keeping Your Nuclear Missiles in Enemy Country

Keeping Your Nuclear Missiles in Enemy Country ???

While listening to these stories of terrorist potentially bringing in nuclear material into the US, I thought: Why did any of the nuclear powers thought of that before? … … to have mobile nuclear launchers and their missiles secretly based in potential enemy country. What would have been the limitation to doing something like that? ... ... The fear that it might actually trigger a war?

Keeping offensive military hardware on any country's soil un-invited would mean the declearation of war.

If we put that aside, you do realize that even smallest mobile ballistic missile launchers are the size of a city bus. How do you hide them? How do you address the resupply, maintainace, crew rotations, and security issues?

I take your point.

I was thinking of buying a few farms and have life long dedicated people for the "cause" - i.e. one of those husband and wife pairs. They own and run the farm while at the same time they are experts on the missile system. They have a barn of some storage facility for their farm equipment and a missile launcher in one corner and under cover can be stored there too. They could have loyal staff too.

What I see as an issue is keeping them secret for 5, 10, 15 years.

I'm not sure if I interpret your post correctly. Do you also mean that they would assemble the nuclear missile itself? Because obviously even if they somehow have the capability to build a missile system from scratch... it's no good without the nuke itself.

This would work a lot better if you have some sort of a suicide operative with just a warhead and not a missle; that would be the ultimate preemptive strike. But still, this plan is not a good one because of the risk involved.

Indeed, technological problems with feasibility aside, militarily there are many things that you can accomplish that you wouldn't be able to otherwise if you have no qualms about not returning alive.

Agreed. If you are already in your target country what do you need missiles for? Missiles are the means of transporting warheads from your country to your enemies but if the warheads are there then storage and concealment becomes a much smaller problem. The Soviet Union developed small 'suitcase' nuclear bombs for just this purpose, about 160 of them (if memory serves) although since the fall of the USSR there are rumours that some of them have gone missing...

Thanks for getting involved: Yes, i guess a "missile" is not required and all one needs is the warhead, to keep thing simple.

Yes, the Russian suitcase bombs!!! That is the idea. Maybe something bigger. Maybe in a container or based on a truck or semi. Not necessarily suicidal, once you set it off, your "host" contry will hunt you down and want your head on a platter!
