The latest rumor is both CAC (J-20 derivative) and SAC (J-35?) will build its own stealth shipborne fighter prototype simultaneously and let the real stuff compete side by side!

What? Sorry, but I need some more explanations ... I thought a navalised J-20 is dead since years and now you said, the SAC J-35 (?) already flew? May I ask, who noted this rumour since I've read nothing more since your update?

And how long will it take for a CAC J-20X to be developed?

Not a navalized J-20 but a new single engined aircraft.

Very interesting development, if true.

I supposed this would probably correspond to the stage when CAC was developing the 2001, 2002 technology demonstrators for J-20 before they were given the go-ahead to build 2011 and later prototypes. So both CAC and SAC would be funded to build their respective tech demonstrators before the final selection is decided.

Again, if true, it implies both designs have their respective merits and PLAAF wants to promote competition.
