hi everyone, the recent coup de tat in Thailand prompted me to ask this question:

do you think that its possible the PLA generals would stage a similar coup if the civilian goverment in china were to become very unpopular?

AND

could the same thing happen in Tawain? as President chen's popularity is really taking a nose dive.

No and no.

The PLA is loaded with Party loyalists. Maybe, just maybe, if splits inside the CCP became critical, one side might pre-empt the other and have a "coup" to get rid of the others. But that's unlikely right now.

In Taiwan, it is again unlikely that anyone would have a military coup because the Opposition is well placed to take control of government in the next few years. In Thailand the PM was only unpopular amongst the elite - common people liked him. So new elections weren't enough for the coup plotters - they needed to get rid of him.

Plus in Thailand the King has a lot of respect, so the fact he was there to "control" the plotters made people feel more secure. You wouldn't have that in China or Taiwan.

Just about to say that is not the PLA a bit big for it just going for a one sided coup? if anything i think that a civil war might happen if it got really bad.
