India orders additional Russian warships

It seems that India is satisfied with the quality of the Talwar/Krivak-III class frigates, after they resolved the Shtil missile system issues back in 2003.

India agrees Russia warship order

India took delivery of its first Russian stealth frigate in 2003
India has agreed to buy three more stealth warships and 28 cruise missiles from Russia for more than $1bn.

The frigates will be delivered in five years time, Indian Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee told reporters after the cabinet had cleared the deal.

Delhi purchased three similar frigates from Russia in the 1990s.

India remains one of the world's biggest arms importers and has one of the largest navies, with at least 25 warships and 16 submarines.

Earlier deal

The warships on order weigh 4,000 tonnes each and cannot be tracked by radar.

Mr Mukherjee said contracts still had to be signed with Russian builders for the new frigates.

He said the decision to buy the frigates was a follow-up order to warships bought in the 1990s.

India's navy took delivery of its first Russian-built "stealth" warship in 2003.

The INS Talwar was the first of three Krivak class frigates commissioned from Russia in another deal worth $1bn.

Military officials have said in the future India hopes to build most naval ships at its own shipyards, although Delhi will still buy equipment from foreign countries, particularly Russia.

I love how it says the upgraded Talwar can't be tracked by radar. I wonder what it would say about Lafayette or the type 22 FAC.

The Talwar doesn't look stealthy to me at all when compared to the FAC 22 or Lafayette. All those sensors and missile canisters sticking out everywhere would give the ship away in no time.

Ya, the Talwar might not be as stealthy as the Lafayette or the FAC-22 designwise, but in practicality it is giving the desired results as a stealthy boat, looks are not the final indicator always.:)

how? Did Times of India tell you that?

Practically speaking, hull signature reduction shaping doesn't matter much when you consider that

1) sea level sources are probably not your only concerns

2) radar and weapons are the biggest contributors and are still visible

now if stealth was a major design criteria, there won't be the RBUs at the forecastle and the mast would be of solid construction.

I sincerely doubt that the Talwar class can reasonably be described as stealthy.

No way. The ship may have some degree of stealth but it is not invisible to radar. No ship is.

The mention of stealth in the article is erroneous.

Only a bare frigate, i.e without even the protrusions of missile launchers and radar may be able to provide some stealth against enemy sea-based radars.
