HI ALL this was the news in 2006 that india had leased akula subs

The Russian online daily Kommersant has reported that Mikhail Dmitriev, who heads the Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation, announced yesterday that Russian arms export for the year 2005 touched $6.126-billion. This amount is $826 million more than the amount announced by Russian President Vladmir Putin on 28 Dec 2005. Kommersant, quoting military sources, attributes the increase to the delivery to China the eighth Project 636 submarine ($225 million) and sale to India of the Akula Project 971 nuclear submarine ($600 million) constructed by Amur Shipbuilder, the Khabarovsk Region.

It may be recalled that in August 2005, Bellona Web had reported evidence of construction of a nuclear submarine training centre for the Indian Navy in Sosnovy Bor, 70 kilometers west of St. Petersburg in Russia.

The training center, large enough to train 300 submariners, was built in record time following the visit of Russian President Vladamir Putin to India in Dec 2004.

but the interesting thing is that india has never got the subs and there has not been any more news about them. unless the india is seeking help from russia for its atv(nuclear ssn) and decided to not to make the purchase and go for the atv which means it is advanced stage of devolopment.

Actually, according to tphuang, a respected memeber of SDF, this news wasn't true. One of the most respectable online submarine experts (forgetting the name and the forum, ask tphuang for it if you want to know) disputed this news. Also, I still haven't heard of any respectable sources such as Janes, Kanwa, etc. verifying this.

thats true there has no more news about the akula deal. recently there was news that the deal had come under american pressure as they did not want india to have a nuclear ssn admist their best pressure to stop the atv project
but since relation between the two have undergone a transformation in the past year i doubt the pressure still exists but still the americans had put tremendous pressure on india to stop their agni 3 missile test which failed .

the atv it seems has received a lifeline though its 190 mw reactor has undergone test runs recently

Indian Ocean and Gulf
The Indian Navy's aspirations to exercise military presence both in the Indian Ocean and beyond are well known. But these were given greater emphasis in 2000 when, in a symbolic gesture, Indian Navy ships conducted exercises in the South China Sea for the first time with the Vietnamese Navy. These may have been relatively low key but a strong message has been sent to China whose own growing ambitions have received perhaps greater attention in recent years. The ability of the Navy, long regarded as being the poor relation of its sister services, to make its presence felt beyond Indian borders has also been recognised in budgetary terms. After a 15 per cent increase in 2000, a further 13 per cent has been allocated for 2001, demonstrating that its share of the overall defence budget is on much firmer ground than it has been in the past. Much of the increase is to fund the enhancement of power projection capabilities, at the heart of which lies the plan to have two operational aircraft carriers by 2010. Negotiations for the procurement from Russia of the Admiral Gorshkov first began in 1994 but it does look now as if the contract may be finalised in 2001. This will probably include supply of some 20 MiG 29 aircraft but the need for the ship to have a refit, at India's considerable expense, means that it is unlikely that the ship will enter service before 2004. The other programme is for a replacement in about 2007 of the recently refitted Viraat. The so-called `air-defence ship' of about 32,000 tons is likely to draw on Russian designs which is indicative of the close relationship between India and Russia that pervades many of its naval programmes The other major component of Indian naval expansion is the production of a nuclear submarine. Construction of this boat is programmed to start in 2002 and it is reported that agreement has been reached on the lease of a Russian boat in order to develop a cadre of personnel with experience of nuclear submarine operations. In other submarine programmes, Sindushastra, the tenth `Kilo' class was commissioned in 2000 while Project 75, for further conventional submarines, may now be taken forward with French and Russian help rather than as a development of its Type 1500 `Shishumar' class. The quality of the surface fleet is being significantly improved with the introduction into service of the third `Delhi' class destroyer while the rapid production of three Russian-built `Talwar' class frigates is to be followed by three modified ships to be built in India.
