I think there is a seed of truth to this, at least in relation to my own country, Australia, though I suspect it holds true for the other Anglo settler-colonial states also. There is a kind of psychic wound deep in the unconscious heart of the country, knowing that much of what it now claims was ill-gotten, the product of violence and injustice, a moral debt that could, at least in the realm of monotheistic religion that acknowledges neither limits to ideals, nor relations of power, could one day be called in. This buried guilt produces the anxiety common to those who cannot sleep with a clean conscience, with all its hostility and deflections.
In any case, reading this stirred a memory of a line from Gore Vidal that I encountered long ago, and I'm pleased that Google eventually allowed me to dig it up. It is from an at the Edinburgh Book Festival in November 2001: "We’re so excited about terrorism in America because we’ve done so many awful things to other people that we’re afraid they might retaliate. And it’s amazing how seldom they do."
This in turn led me on a lovely and refreshing journey revisiting some of Gore Vidal's contributions to public debate over the decades. His deep familial roots in the American political establishment, coupled with his searing criticism of the US government and foreign policy, informed by his background in classics (i.e. Greece and Rome) and delivered with the wit of a talented writer and essayist, remains a singular and formidable combination. He passed away some years ago now. I would urge those (perhaps of a younger generation), not already acquainted with him to check him out. I really need to get around to reading his "narratives of Empire" novels at some point. In the meantime, here are a few other of my favourite lines of his:

It's funny because for some reason the hanjian always look like incels. I have to think its some sort of psychological transferrence of their own self-hatred or resentment. They are frustrated with being looked down upon by their peers and opposite sex of the same race. Then they try to subvert those emotions by serving the interests of the outsiders in a misguided attempt to earn merit/approval from those they perceive as "even more superior" than their peers. Combine that with financial self-interest and a toxic ego seeking gratification and you end up with these human scum.

He's just an anarchist/libertarian type that can be found on so many social media and web forums in America. If China wasn't an enemy of the west, then this dude wouldn't have any platform to spew his venomous but otherwise comedic take and nihilistic views on China, Chinese identity, history and the concept of freedom.
America and the west aren't yet becoming insecure with respect to their political governance and system, but once that's threatened from both within and without, do we honestly think that their polical leaders, public wouldn't demand severe regulations that would INFRINGE AND LIMIT the SPEECH of people?

Yeah. I'm definitely going to waste my time reading the biography of a hanjian. They mostly fit the same archetypes so the details here don't matter. RFA, NED, all the same shit.

The reason is very simple; it's all about the different between how alphas and betas respond to their environments. Hanjian are extremely beta, so they follow the trend wherever they go. Betas blend into their surroundings and are only comfortable when protected by numbers. People who look like that in China aren't hanjian because being so wouldn't put them in any favor, but when they go overseas, they realize that it's detrimental to them, even dangerous to be a proud Chinese and disagree with the majority opinion so they change their opinions to avoid danger. Alphas hold their own convictions wherever they go and will more likely change a crowd by themselves before a crowd has a chance to change them. Alphas are nationalistic whereever they go, even if it's dangerous because they care about self rather than environment and they are confident about self regardless of the environment. And lastly, the higher testosterone levels in alphas will make it so that they cannot tolerate insults to their kind/race and will always strive to fight and win when insulted, even as an underdog against a superpower. An alpha would rather fight and suffer his whole life to make his home country better than a rival country even if it is a seemingly impossible task (like China in the 80's vs the US) just so he can declare that he and his country are the best and won the fight, rejecting the easy way out, which would be to just join the rival country instead (and likely return back to his home country if it overtakes the rival country). Betas are more mellow and estrogen-driven with a mentality that as long as the conflict is not personal, it's nothing to fight for and when it does get personal, rather than fight, they must defuse by conceeding and in a society that is against their race, that often means becoming traitors to their own nation rather than putting themselves in the danger.
