i've rummaged through forums to get a better idea of just how many which ampibious assault ships do pla and plan have combined. i am not happy with what i've got so far so maybe someone can fill in the blanks.
aside from the well known trio of 071 ships, there seems to be 24 072 type (and similar) vessels alive. as far as i can tell, two more were handed over to coast guard in recent years.
medium sizes lst ships are an issue for me. i cant' find detailed list of their numbers. some sources say there is a total of 40 in service, other that many have been retired and that goal is to have 25 remaining in active service. here i am talking about 074 class and its ppredecessors similar in size. all of these are under plan command, right?
then there are the smaller, 20ish meter landin craft. type 067 and such. as far as i can tell, majority of these is actually under pla command, a total of 81 ships. but i cant find numbers on plan's inventory. how many are there on top of pla craft? any sourcs for that?
there are four zubrs in the making, i assume they are all to be plan command?
i am aware there is also fleet of various merchant navy ships, ro ro ferries and such, including those few new specialized ro-ro sgips for the pla, built in dalian. civilian fleet is far more numerous and larger of course. stuft thread at csf listed some 50 large ropax and car ferryships that they speculate could be used by the armed forces.
but those dont interest me as much for this thread as id like to know more about assault ships. various roro ships would hardly be used for landing at contested ports. so what id like to know is this: are there any papers researching the potential use of civilian ships for assault role? some source that could offer some figures and some actual limits to the potential we all know exists? i am talking here about any sort of ship that could tag rhibs behind it, or lower boats in the water, then disembark soldiers into those boats ww2 style, before final beach landing. or possibly any small civilan ferry whose draught is sufficiently shallow to be used as improvised lst, (operating under hope that once the vehicles are out, ship would be lighter and would float again and could reverse)
potential here is literally hundreds of ships or tens of thousands of ships. perhaps each with half a dozen rhib boats for final assault. but which one is it? any work out there researching that matter?
another question: what is designation of that plan ferry that looks civilian by design , like a simple large barge, with command bridge on one side of the ship? how many of those are in service?
