Subsidies for energy resilience are being expanded to cover battery storage as well as coal plants.

China’s rapid adoption of renewable energy requires a flexible power source to smooth out fluctuations in wind and solar generation. China’s old policy,

after a spate of severe blackouts, rewarded the country’s vast fleet of coal-fired power plants for maintaining readiness to meet peak electricity demand. The first phase of the new policy will allow batteries, and other energy storage options like pumped hydro, to benefit alongside coal from the subsidies. A second stage is envisaged that opens up the market to competition, with payments based on “reliability rather than installed capacity,” BloombergNEF said in a note.

Leveling the playing field is likely to put coal under competitive pressure, and could favor the smaller, though fast-growing battery sector.
By establishing a comprehensive compensation system for energy storage projects, the sector is officially entering a new phase of development that will be led by the market, Chen Haisheng, director general of the

, said at a briefing on Tuesday. Local versions of the policy have already had an impact. National installations of energy storage systems reached 183 gigawatt-hours in 2025, about 30% above expectations, according to HSBC Holdings Plc. The bank cited capacity payments in western China as helping to drive the increase.

Last year was a banner year for renewables, which accounted for upwards of 1/3rd of growth and 9/10ths of investment.

Solar power, electric vehicles (EVs) and other clean-energy technologies drove more than a third of the growth in China’s economy in 2025 – and more than 90% of the rise in investment. Clean-energy sectors contributed a record 15.4tn yuan ($2.1tn) in 2025, some 11.4% of China’s

  • Without clean-energy sectors, China would have missed its

  • Clean-energy industries are expanding much more quickly than China’s economy overall, with their annual growth rate accelerating from 12% in 2024 to 18% in 2025.
  • The “

  • Exports of clean-energy technologies grew rapidly in 2025, but China’s domestic market still far exceeds the export market in value for Chinese firms.

全球最大“电动巨轮”:国内首制万吨级纯电动智能海船“宁远电鲲”号开启海试

World's largest "electric giant ship": Ningyuan Diankun, China's first domestically built 10,000-ton pure electric intelligent seagoing vessel, begins sea trials

According to Science and Technology Daily, the "Ningyuan Diankun," a 740TEU pure electric open-top container ship built by Jiangxi Jiangxin Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., the world's largest and China's first domestically built 10,000-ton-class pure electric intelligent seagoing vessel, was launched for sea trials on February 1 in Hukou County, Jiangxi Province, after completing all interior decoration, equipment installation and commissioning, mooring trials and inspections.

According to reports, the sea trial project covers aspects such as container battery power supply, propulsion motor load under various conditions, hull performance and autonomous navigation. It is expected to arrive at the Shanghai sea trial area on February 6 and end the sea trial on February 13.

The vessel is 127.8 meters long, 21.6 meters wide, and 10.5 meters deep. It has 740 standard 20-foot container bays and is equipped with 10 box-type batteries for power . It can be charged by high-voltage shore power or quickly swapped by hoisting the box-type batteries.

In addition, the ship is equipped with a photovoltaic system to provide renewable energy support for ship operation, truly achieving zero emissions throughout the entire process of operation, berthing, loading and unloading.

According to information obtained by IT Home from the official website of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of Jiangxi Province, Jiangxi Jiangxin Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. was established in July 1966. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Jiangxi Provincial Military Industry Holding Group Co. , Ltd. It is among the first batch of key enterprises announced by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology that meet the "Shipbuilding Industry Standard Conditions," a key shipbuilding base and leading enterprise in Jiangxi Province, a key military enterprise in the province's defense industry, a member unit of Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry, and the chairman unit of the Jiangxi Provincial Shipbuilding Industry Association. The company is located in Hukou County, Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province.
