China's transport, tanker & heavy lift aircraft

Re: China's Transport Aircraft

Btw what does Il-476 look like any pictures?

The Article includes a picture of the IL-476.

"Although externally the modernized plane bears a close resemblance to its predecessor, the new plane boasts modernized wing-construction, the body has been reinforced, and the engines updated. The on-board communication and navigation systems have also been updated."

bare c17 still costs usaf little over 200 million. for export that goes to 250 million, over 300 million if one includes logistic support and optional equipment. c17 is larger, of course.

a400m is smaller than il476 range wise is payload weight wise (the same in payload area ) yet it still costs close to 200 million, probably with logistic support.

il476 seems set to sell for about 130 to 150 million for export, with logisitic support. that is still pretty good, considering its range, payload weight...

But IL-476 essentially just an upgradeof IL-76 which cost 50 million. Yes, probably a more modern cockpit and slight higher payload. But I think buyer will still think that is a massive increase of cost.

Ok so it's a IL-76 with a upgrade why give it a new name.…

They gave it a new designation to justify the huge jump in price IMHO. Those strategic planes are insanely expensive to import so I hope the Y-20 is coming along nicely as rumoured.

Re: China's Transport Aircraft

Il 476 is the title, for the restoration of Il 76 production in Ulyanovsk, not the plane itself. The most difficult phase in this project was making all the blueprinsts digital, so the numeric metal processing machines could be utilized, and the experts were badly lacking whole time. There were no jump price since TAPOiCh in Uzbekistan was unable , to serially manufacture airplanes long time a go, and what ever the price was, it is meaningless beacuse, it could not deliver final product. Its been finally closed in the meantime.

Re: China's Transport Aircraft

The Y-9 and Y-8 are two very different aircrafts in terms of size and weight. The above calculation may work for different variants of Y-8 but it can't be extrapolated to the Y-9. Two aircrafts of very different sizes may have the same ferry range of, let's say 3000km but the larger aircraft will always have the capacity to transport a larger payload (that is roughly proportional to the two aircraft's size differences) to a distance of 1500 km, as an example.
They are basically the same aircraft if you look at it.

tphuang, AFAIK c130j-30 is just a stretched (4,6 meters) version of C-130J, heavier (1,5 t) but with the same engines. where did you get that 3889 km number ?

At 2800km its practically the same as c-130J. I dont understand why you say it "pales".
Originally, when I was looking at writing the article, that's what that link I posted stated.

If you look at the MTOW of the 2 aircrafts, there's a difference of 16000 kg. The only problem is the Wiki source didn't really provide a reference for the figure.

Meanwhile, China brought more used IL-76 rather than go for the IL-476.
