This official max take-off weight is 10% lower than the estimated number of 220t in wikipedia and other websites.Attendees mingle around Y-20 in Austria + an information placard.
I wonder how much is its max capacity? Would it be 66t as estimated in wikipedia? Or, would it be capable of carrying the type 99A level MBT (estimated 55t) for sure?
Take those precise numbers with a grain of salt. I believe it's a Chinese way of abbreviate speech. Same as how 055 is referred to as the "10,000 ton Destroyer" (万吨舰)。I don't believe that the Y-20 is precisely "200,000 kg" accurate to the kg. That's just not how engineering products of this size is designed and produced. I believe the Chinese simply communicated in the way we Chinese always communicate: saying it's a "200 ton class" (“200 吨级别的运输机”), which translate to 200,000 kg ("200 吨不就是 200000千克么！").
I imagine the conversation goes like this:
Airshow Staff: 飞机参数里的最大起飞重量该怎么写。（What should we put down as the MTOW?）
Head Pilot/C.O.: 咱们的运20是200吨级的飞机。(Our plane is a 200ton class bird.)
Airshow Staff: 那具体该写多少呢？(So, what number should we put down on the info board?)
Head Pilot/C.O.: 我说了是200吨级的，你就写200吨级别就行了。(I told you it's a 200ton class, just put down "200 ton class" on it.)
Airshow Staff: 具体到公斤，改写多少呢？(Okey, so, in kilogram, what number should we put down?)
Head Pilot/C.O.: 你自己算呗！200吨不就是200000kg么。爱怎么写都行。(It's one simple calculation away! 200ton is 200,000kg. Simple! Put down whatever you want.)
Airshow Staff: 那就200,000kg。(200,000kg it is!)
Y-20 is much larger of course. And A400M looks even tinier than C-130 because of distance. Y-20 is close to C-17 grade.
I guess this is the kind of aircraft mix you can only ever appreciate in a neutral country like Austria. While it remains neutral.
