Good time to do some marketing activity for Y-20, since C-17 production line has stopped, and production of latest IL-76 is not progressing well. There are no other competitors in the same weight class.

I still feel weird that Y20 didn't use any form of winglets. Does anyone know any studies that they've done to prove winglets are not useful for this configuration?

I don't know the technical reason behind it, but just to point out all large military cargo plane, from C-2 A-400M to C-5 AN-124, except C-17, none of them use winglets.
When C-17 was designed, USAF had a specific request, three C-17s only needed 120x90m amount of space to park, thus seriously restricted how big the wing span C-17 could have, so the solution was winglets and so called "powered-lift system", which added a certain level of complexity and cost.

It might have something to do with Antonov, whose expertise China relied on when designing the Y-20's wings way back then. Winglets aren't something Antonov is known for, that and China might have been very conservative in its approach at the time.

China now definitely has experience with winglets (C919 has them), so I don't see why they can't be incorporated into a future Y-20 variant, if the PLAAF deems it worthwhile.

Why does a military aircraft need winglet? Commercial airliners use them because there are strict dimension gates that they want to be able to use. If a321 wing gets too long, then it can't use class 3 gates anymore. There is not such concerns for military aircraft.

Winglets are on a few military transport. C130 have been retrofit. Some C295 and C17 have them. They reduce wing vortex effect, said Vortex’s increase drag. So they improve fuel efficiency at the cost of increased costs and width.
