Though China enters the game with a working prototype late, I'd say this demonstrates that entering the game late isn't necessarily a bad thing. Significant time had allowed the industry to mature that for someone to come in late with a new product, they are able to learn a lot first of what to avoid, what they can incorporate, and thus if they did their management and homework properly, they have a much more smoother ride and transition to producing a new effective design than one who was exploring frontier. This is a typical PLC(Product Life Cycle) thing.

Consider F-35 vs J-21 (still premature to say, but at least PLA won't have trended certain mistakes the F-35 did)
Consider the US stealth technology timeline vs China's (literally skipped the F-117A)

Don't consider F-35 vs J-21. The engineers on F-35 are enormously handicapped by the extremely ridiculous specification of one STOVL and two non-STOVL versions that were to have 70% common components.

Can't they make something like the Google Glass instead of HUD?

1. Things like Google Glass has yet reach maturity;
2. Even if adopt something like those use by attack helicopters, please make a consideration to the working environment of the airlifter's pilots - long flight hours that doesn't require them to look all over the place to "hunt" or to dodge obstacles;
3. The likes of Google Glass requires wifi / bluetooth / wireless technology to operate, and there comes the EM integration issues with a modern plane that's stuffed with electronics...in case you wonder why FAA still haven't allow wifi on planes...

That said, a HUD would be practical, and for Chinese pilots this is a marked improvement from the analog days.
