In making the announcement Tuesday, State Department spokesman Adam Ereli said the sanctions were based on "credible evidence," which he did not disclose.

The companies on the U.S. list were the China Aerotechnology Import Export Corp.; military contractor China Northern Industries Corp.; Zibo Chemet Equipment Co.; the Hongdu Aviation Industry Group; Ounion International Economic and Technical Cooperative Ltd. and the Limmt Metallurgy and Minerals Co.

Employees who answered phone calls on Wednesday to those companies said they had no information about possible sales to Iran. None of the employees would give their names.

It certainly does. China along with India and Austria are furious witht the US over this.

Everyone should note that this is an Internal US Law being enacted not an International one. No referrals have been made to any Anti-proliferation bodies and all the information available from India and Austria seems to show that the offending deals conformed to International Law. No information is available from China on these matters, but given the lack of other fuss and granting the principle of Innocent until proven Guilty, I think we can safely assume that the Chinese deals conform to International law as well.

So what is this about?

It looks like yet another sad downward step by the USA as it slowly starts to sink into a morass of Protectionism, Isolationisem and probably what will prove to be the longest continous sulk by any nation in history.

For China this looks set to become yet another diplomatic victory, as it illustrates to the rest of world (especially the developing world) how China adheres to International development and co-operation, whilst the US wallows in Unilateralisem. Just the message in fact the PRC has been broadcasting to the world in its recent "Peaceful Road of Development" Policy Document.

The US is applying pressure on foreign companies that do business with Iran. The problem here is that there are so many "dual use" technology and materials that can be applied to military uses, that leaves a huge grey region.

As for the companies being sanctioned, I think Hongdu Aviation Industry Group is the company that made the Q-5 and K-8?

Yet the US does nothing to Israel, a country which openly sell US weaponry to other countries without US permission.

the u.s kicked israel out of the jsf programm. thats probably punishment there. the u.s also forces israel to cancel deals time and time again, such as with the chinese phalcon.

Israel was readmitted to the JSF program about two months ago. Also, the Israelis were PISSED that Congress forced them to cancel the Phalcon deal so in return, the US allowed Israel to sell the Phalcon to India. Israel also gave Harpy missiles to China along with Python 3 missiles (or was it Pyhton 4?) Anyway, the Israelis do a lot of things that the US doesn't approve, but the US only gives Israel a slap on the wrist while companies from other countries are sanctioned.

Python 3 in the 70's. Anyway, what's the deal with the Harpies? Are they still in Isreali custody or have they been returned?

I believe they have been returned to china without upgrade. Also, I think only a very small number of Harpies were sent to Israel, so China was angry more with the loss of face rather than the loss of harpies itself.
