I have heard that the 'Sunburn' sea-skimming anti ship missile is the best thing around. I read that it is as fast as a bullet and there is no defense against it. Is all that true? Does anyone have any pictures of it?

Next time use your search engine. Those questions can be answered there...
The Sunburn is also know as the Moskit... It can be defended. But the proof is in the doing....If the Sunburn was indefensible the Iranians would be firing them at the US 5th fleet in the Persian Gulf righ now. But they are not.

This link will tell you all about the sunburn missile.

With respect, while Moskit can probably be defended against, your arguement given was very poor one. The Iranians are not at state of war with America, nor are they particularly ancious to start a fight on such disadvantageous terms as they would if they sneak-attacked the 5th fleet. It is a bit like saying... Israel doesn't like Syria. Israel has Jericho missiles. Isreal did not launch Jericho at Syria. Therefore clearly Syria can defend against Jericho... Doesn't wash.

Regarding Moskit, it is a good missile, but far from the best... it is not even the best in Russia's inventory.

I agree with bd here, Moskit is good, but not the best and can be defended. But if there are a lot of Moskit fired toward to a CVBG, I would say it is a serious threat.

I do have an additional question. I know in China, Moskit is carried by destoryers, is this the case in Russia? Do they have planes capable of carrying these missles? It is a really big and heavy missile.

Yes, there is an air-launched version of the moskit, called the ASM-MMS,or the kh-41. It works similar to the kh-31, and introduced in (1992? not sure), It is carried by su-33s, though Im sure a tu-22 could carry one if neccesary.

Oh yes. In fact almost all Russian anti-ship cruis missiles are multiple-role adapted... from Moskit to Oniks. It is the ASM-MMS missile.

Well if the chinese destroyers that field the Moskit are made in Russia out of non-finished russian huls, so yeah, russians do field Moskit in DDg's. Apart form project 956 destroyers, And single project 1155.1 class destroyer Admiral Chabayenko has the missile onboard ocean going warships. A project 1241 Tarantul-III class missile boats and project 1239 Dergah class hovercrafts fields the missile too. Also, one of the WiG projects fielded the missile, but I cannot remember its name.

there was a mock up of the air launched version, Kh-41 was shown in one air show, but wheter this was operational or not, who knows. A Su-33 that carried it on the belly cannot take of whit that missile from Kuznetsov (apart what they migth say in the AMF forum:mad: )

Actually the both Soviet name Moskit and Western name SS-N-22 Sunburn indicts on two seperate missiles that were launched from the same tubes. The first version, P-80 was rocket powered variant with better range and it was onboard early Tarantulls and first batch of the project 956 destroyers. It was made by Chelomey. A ram-jet version made by Raduga, P-270 or 3M80 by its industrial name later substituted the P-80 and the later missile was sold to china. They both were mented as supersonic replacements for P-120 Malachit missiles (that shares the SS-N-9 designation whit couple of other missiles) and formed the short range element in the third generation of russian cruise missiles. P-500 Granit being the longer range missile in the soviet practice of soviet RKR division that called for one brigade of long range missile ships or subs and two brigades of shorter range.

Most advanced cruise missiles in today are the Russian Club and yakhont systems (SS-N-27 Sizzler and SS-N-26). the yakhont is currently beeing introducted by india under the name bhramoss which is going to be a joint venture to manufacture the missile.

in future, we Have the military FAQ thread in the world armed forces section to ask all guestions regarding any military matters.

That'll be the Project 903 Lun. Very impressive ship/ plane. Carries six of the big bastards.
