Russian Navy Victor III-class SSN Obninsk Practices Torpedo Attack in Drills

The crew of Russia’s Project 671RTMK (NATO reporting name: Victor-III class) nuclear-powered attack submarine Obninsk has practiced attacking a simulated enemy’s ships with torpedoes in the Barents Sea, the Russian Northern Fleet’s press office said
The submarine’s crew launched torpedoes against a group of ships comprising the heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky and the large antisubmarine warfare ships Severomorsk and Vice-Admiral Kulakov," the press office said.

According to the press office, the exercise was successful and all surface targets were notionally destroyed.

"During all stages of the exercise, the crew of the submarine Obninsk showed high skills and cohesion," the press office said.

The crew members also practiced underwater maneuvering and improved their skills in avoiding the pursuit.

The Project 671RTMK submarine is a second-generation nuclear-powered submarine but it has come closer to third-generation submarines due to its upgrade. The Project 671RTMK nuclear-powered attack submarine is armed with two 650mm and four 533mm torpedo tubes with a total of 24 torpedoes. According to data of several sources, the Project 671RTMK nuclear-powered attack submarine Obninsk checked its weapons and launched a cruise missile of the Kalibr (SS-N-27 Sizzler) missile system in the Barents Sea in December 2014.

, the Deputy Director for the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC) Anatoliy Punchuk said, “In 2018, Russia will supply 10 Su-30 aircraft. Thus, the contract will be completed by the end of next year.”

As per Sputnik News, two of the Su-30s were delivered to Nigeria in 2017. The variant was not disclosed.

earmarked $68.76 million for “platform acquisitions … for counter air, counter surface, air ops for strategic effect and air support operations.”

In light of the recent news about the Su-30, the NAF acquisition budget appears to involve several combat platform purchases – i.e. JF-17, Su-30,

.

With the Su-30 and JF-17, the NAF would maintain a ‘high-and-low’ composition, respectively. The Su-30 would likely be counted upon to provide the ‘strategic effect’ aspect of the NAF’s requirements, such as long-range strikes and maritime operations. The JF-17 would fulfill air defence and attack operations in-land over Nigeria’s territories and border areas.

UAC AIMS TO BEGIN EXPORTING MIG-35 FIGHTERS BY 2020

United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) is aiming to produce MiG-35 Fulcrum-F multi-role fighters for export by 2020.

Speaking to media (via

) at the 2017 Paris Air Show, which concluded on Sunday June 25, Rosoboronexport CEO Alexander Mikheyev said that he expects UAC to complete the MiG-35’s qualification tests in 2018 or 2019, from which it will be “accepted as a product for exports.”

As per TASS, the Russian Air Force (VKS) will procure an initial batch of 30 MiG-35. The VKS aims to have the Fulcrum-F gradually replace its existing MiG-29 fleet.

MiG Aircraft Company’s Deputy CEO, Viktor Chernov, was confident of the MiG-35’s export potential, citing “South and Southeast Asia, Latin America and African countries” as prospective markets.

The MiG-35 is the latest variant of the venerable MiG-29 Fulcrum platform, which is both the mainstay of the VKS as well as a popular Russian export since the 1980s, especially in the developing world.

Besides incorporating key improvements in electronics, most notably the inclusion of the Zhuk-AE active electronically-scanned array (AESA) radar, the Fulcrum-F also benefits from greater composite usage. This provides the MiG-35 with a substantially lighter empty weight than the legacy Fulcrum, resulting a longer operational radius (50% as per TASS) and payload (6,000 kg as per

).

Notes & Comments:

UAC has angled its MiG-35 pitch for the developing world market, which is flush with both legacy MiG-29s as well as even older fighter models from Russia, China, Europe and the U.S.

When it formally launched the MiG-35, the MiG Aircraft Company’s Director General, Ilya Tarasenko,

the MiG-35’s lower life-cycle (30-40%) and acquisition (20%) costs over its competition as key draws for the fighter, positioning it for traction in the market.

The MiG-35’s

will rest in competitive cost and flexibility in terms of subsystem and weapons integration options. The VKS fulfilling its commitment to supplant its legacy MiG-29s with the Fulcrum-F will be critical in that it would generate outside confidence in the platform and greatly help scale the MiG-35’s development overhead.

Currently, UAC is fulfilling a 50 MiG-29M/M2 order for Egypt, which ordered the fighters in a reported $2 billion agreement in 2016. The first Egyptian Air Force fighter was
