I do not think the HQ-9 designation being upgraded refers to anything other than the missile. I haven't seen any indication that the upgrade to the new AESA engagement radar was not what resulted in the HQ-9 designation being changed to B.

Does HQ-9B really incorporate dual guidance ( IR+active radar homing ) ? I have seen sources referring such. But missile mock up displayed in exhibitions and real footages doesn't show any sign of dual guidance. GcrzrhZW0AAknZA.png
