BMW's Neue Klasse EV architecture is now available on the new iX3
This is supposed meant to be competitive with Chinese EVs where sales have fallen

This is hot on the heels of the VWAG release of the Audi Q6/Porsche Macan PPE EV new generation platform.

Wondering if anyone with a better technical background can go into some of the details of advanced EV platforms and where Chinese manufacturers stand (ie. BYD ePlatform 3.0, Geely SEA, XPeng), what features are considered "modern"?

I've compiled a short list of some elements, again lacking expertise
800+V - Enabling faster charging speed
>12V to 48V Power System - For powering components, higher power components such as vision processing computers, Cybertruck is the first 48V car
Software architecture - Semi centralized architecture vs. classic distributed architecture, reduces wiring length/weight, faster production, software updates - Tesla is still the leader year, even by Chinese standards. Often lauded by Chinese manufacturers for using only 1500m of cable.
Assisted Driving architecture
Battery Tech (Cell in body, etc.)
Powertrain enhancements
SiC power chips - Improved power efficiency, can improve range, power to weight, etc.

BYD's cheapest car gets 5 stars in EURO NCAP
I don't understand why BYD insists to make two different versions of the same car, one for the European and Australian markets, another for the markets in China and the Global South, as though they are discriminating against consumers in China and developing countries. They are doing the same thing with Dolphin. Geely and Nio also have some nice subcompacts, but they do not make two different versions.

China's NEV marked will reach the inflection point this year:
  • NEV cars will outsell ICE cars this year for the first time ever.
  • From January to August, NEV sales jumped 36.7% year-on-year to 9.62 million units, or 45.5% of all new car sales, according to data released Thursday by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). In the domestic market, NEVs captured 48% of sales with 8 million units sold, putting the country on track to hit a 50% share by year-end.
  • Consolidation is coming: more than 95% of NEVs are made by the top 15 automakers.
  • Total vehicle exports rose 13.7% to 4.29 million units in the January-August period. NEV exports surged 87.3% year-on-year to 1.53 million units, nearly doubling in August alone to 224,000 units.

China's NEV market will be bigger than the total auto market of the US in 2026.
  • BloombergNEF’s Electric Vehicles Outlook expects almost 22 million global passenger EV sales this year, a jump of 25% from 2024, as the cost of lithium-ion batteries falls and production of more affordable EV models ramps up.
  • China accounts for nearly two-thirds of global EV sales, followed by Europe at 17% of sales and the US at 7%. Emerging markets, meanwhile, are growing rapidly due to sales from Chinese automakers.
  • China’s annual EV sales are set to surpass total US new vehicle sales of any type in the next year.
  • Due to a shifting US regulatory environment, BNEF has reduced its short and long-term outlook for global passenger EV adoption for the first time.
  • Electricity costs to refuel EVs are rising quickly in some markets. The affordability of vehicles and charging remains critical for EV adoption and sales in the long-term.

Because b) different markets have different regulations and a) by introducing visible changes they can more easily mask their hiked up profit margins, in the everlasting quest to maximize the price for any given market, up to the max price point that a certain market is willing to pay for a product en masse.

Mexico's Claudia Sheinbaum has keeled over and bent the knee to America.

They are now raising tariffs from 20% to 50% on cars from asia, including China.

"Mexico’s Economy Ministry said the new rule will affect imports like textiles, steel, and cars. These changes may impact goods worth around $52 billion. If the law is passed in Parliament, it will become active within 30 days."

What an incredibly stupid and braindead move. Almost as if she was a plant of the US.

Starting January 1st, 2026, China will reintroduce purchase tax for new energy vehicles (NEVs), ending their full tax exemption. While no longer tax-free, NEVs will still receive preferential treatment, paying half the standard purchase tax rate of 10%, resulting in a 5% effective tax rate. However, this reduced rate comes with a cap, limiting the tax reduction to a maximum of ¥15,000 per vehicle. For NEVs priced at ¥300,000 or less, the 5% tax will apply. For NEVs exceeding ¥300,000, the tax will be calculated at 10% of the price, with a ¥15,000 reduction, meaning higher-priced NEVs will effectively pay more tax than lower-priced ones, though still potentially less than comparable internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles depending on their price and the specific tax calculation.

Well, at least they include India and Japan for the tariffs.
