When I saw those Nacelles. I thought that they were doing on the concept art the same job as the additional air inlet on the top of the E2 fuselage and under the engine Nacelles and along the fuselage which I thought was power generation.

They actually are part of the heat management and pressurize the cabin. Yet still I think they could do the same job. There placement is not far off. you have the centerline at the wing root which should do the same job as that on the Hawkeye and then you have two side mounted intakes which would so the same job as the extra intakes on the side of the fuselage and under the engines on the hawkeye.

If those nacelles are for heat management and cabin pressure, they should adopt the approach of the E-2 instead, which looks like it's less weight.

It's a question of Plumbing. Obviously we are looking at concept art not detailed blueprints but you need some kind of heat management.

Clearly the PLAN is making significant progress towards a true AEW aircraft...and it is clear that they have something fairly far along in terms of their design.

First three pictures are years old. I recall seeing them when CV-16 first entered service.

Also for the last fan-boy drawing I believe they got the idea of additional jet engine from a blurred picture of wuhan model which has a mysterious structure near rear fuselage which may or may not be part of aircraft or may be not even a structure at all.

My feeling is this carrier based AWACS will allow China to go far and wide

True global operations

CV-16 and CV-17 in close

CV-18 and CV-19 medium range

CVN units go the distance

AWACS gives situational awareness which allows one to fight on its own terms

This is already half the battle won

Without situational awareness you are fighting blind

Well, these pictures make it pretty clear that the PLAN is heading for a carrier-borne fixed wing AEW aircraft like the E-2 Hawkeye.

We know that the mockup at Wuhan is where they take a hard look at things, both for th present and the future.

Now we are seeing their AEW design showing up there on its deck.

I believe we will see this aircraft on the 002 carriers. Whether it is STO enough to use off of the STOBAR carriers (001 and 001A) is yet to be seen.

The electronics and the done tend to make such aircraft heavy enough that it may be doubtful IMHO, but we shall see.
