Balloons like that float very slowly and from the brief description given by China, it uses some sort of steering which is almost surely very slow.

They couldn't have sent it in a short amount of time. Its also implausible that China could predict that civilians would see it while flying in a plane.

Instead, it's likely a routine movement of an aerial platform to keep tabs on the Americans, which was discovered by accident.


It sits so far up that its not entirely trivial to shoot it down. A thaad or sm6 should not have the correct target profile to hit something like that. Getting a gun so far up into the air could be difficult.

But balloon should be going nowhere. So US has some time to decide how to bring it down. These are almost certainly 1 time use disposable items.

It is a rude shock to USA. Otherwise they wouldn't react on a government level scale.

There really needs to be a sarcasm emoji.

A Chinese balloon has never been over the middle of the country before. The only other time a Chinese balloon has flown over the continental U.S. was during a brief overflight of Florida. There have been overflights of Hawaii and Guam. In previous instances, the Chinese have been able to recover the balloon

I watched the whole briefing, it is half an hour of DOD trying to play down the whole "Spy Balloon hysteria" while retarded journalists repeatedly ask bait questions. DOD doesn't even call it spy balloon, it always calls it a surveillance balloon (i.e., weather balloon).

Americans have a Rube Goldberg mentality. The more complicated, they think the better. When the J-20's side weapons bay was revealed, there were the pro-America types that knocked it because it wasn't as sophisticated as the F-22's side weapons bay despite the J-20's was all-in-all better designed through simplicity. The US is going ape-shit because of the simplicity of a balloon from China getting to the US half-way around the world and not being detected until civilian aircraft visually spotted it.

Of course I know it was theatre, as I have pointed out many times before. In addition to hiding Blinken's failed trip to Chin, this whole balloon hysteria is also meant to make Biden seem tough on China. The media reports paint Biden as the hawk and Gen Milley as the dove.
