Unbelievable, BYD just ordered 2 ships from GSI back in November and it's already going to start production next month and to be delivered by August. That is some fast delivery schedule! BYD must have pulled a few strings there. Interestingly enough, Shenshan production base should be opening around that time, so this is perfect for export market.

I have a hunch that some day CATL will start build cars and become a vertically integrated NEV automaker like BYD.

CATL estimates net profit soars in 2022

CATL, China’s largest battery supplier for electric vehicles, estimates 2022 net profit will range from 29.1 billion yuan ($4.3 billion) to 31.5 billion.

That represents an increase of 83 percent to 98 percent from 2021, the Shenzhen-listed company said this month.

In other CATL news, CATL will also develop lithium mines in Bolivia.

Bolivia selects CATL-led consortium to develop lithium reserves

The CBC consortium will undertake direct lithium extraction from the Uyuni and Oruro salt flats in Bolivia.

According to the hedge fund Snow Bull Capital, BYD may have higher gross margin than Tesla now.

Of course the strongest Tesla competitor is from China, and it's arguable who is really number one at this point!

Tesla's China rivals 'work hardest, smartest,' Musk says

Elon Musk sees the toughest competition for Tesla in China, home of the company he expects "most likely to be second" in electric vehicles.

Tesla reported strong earnings. Musk made some nice comments on China EV businesses. Musk expects to sell over 2 million units this year. I guess half of them will be in China. So Musk essentially agrees that the EV story is about Tesla+China.

On the other hand, the former VW CEO made a recent comment that, by 2025, VW would sell more EV units than Tesla. Well, that would not be such a fantasy if bulk of them were built and sold in China. But based on the current trajectory, I don't think VW has a chance. By 2025, Tesla would be around 3 million EV units while BYD would be over 4 million BEV+PHEV units.

The EV story continues in a movie of "Tesla in China".

“I do want to say, I think, we have a lot of respect for the car companies in China,” Tesla CEO and co-founder Elon Musk told the company’s fourth quarter earnings call.
“They are the most competitive in the world, that is our experience, and the Chinese market is the most competitive. They work the hardest and they work the smartest.
