We already had discussions on China joining TPP before.

Because of China's sheer size, many Chinese companies are already world-class because of domestic competition.
So Chinese companies will likely expand heavily into overseas markets.
Putting aside economic issues. What are the requirements for China to be accepted into CPTPP? Does it need unanimous approval by all of its members?

If yes, then Japan and Australia would be a problem. Maybe for Japan, its businesses will push for it, but for Australia I dont think so

There are a bunch of cooked-up rules to hamper SOEs. That's the biggest technical obstacle I can see.

"Next year’s military merit medal is scheduled, especially the military merit part increased by 333%-500% This is ready to fight Taiwan before the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China"

guys, what mean?
All that chart means is that the Chinese military is promoting competent military personal. In my opinion, this urgency shows that the Chinese believe that war is possibly coming in the near future. This behavior is common among all competent militaries when their respective countries believe that war may happen. But does that mean that the mainland will proactively whack Taiwan next year? I don’t think so. I think the user is getting a little too excited.

20th NC is also where Xis is supposed to get a new term. Just thinking politically he'll have to do something big to justify his extension right? High possibility of of TW reunification.

No I dont think so.
Mr.Xi's political manifesto for having a third term was just released, it is called "common prosperity".
Common Prosperity under One Unified Nation. Perhaps that's the key word that's been purposely omitted? Just speculation on my part. But I am hoping that there's no war at all period because it's not going to be good for all countries involved especially within the ASEAN region since the Asian economic bloc is the fastest growing economy in the world.

But if the prospect of maintaining this uneasy peace is a lot more costlier for the mainland than an actual war then maybe, just maybe the calculus for war will change. And in all honesty, for some idiotic reason that defies logic and common sense, my gut instinct is telling me that war is coming in the not so distant future in the Asia-Pacific. I really am optimistically hoping that such tragic outcome will not come to pass.

Concerns about food safety were sparked again after Chinese police busted a restaurant owner in East China's Jiangsu Province for adding poppy shells, which are used to make opium, to his noodles.

Police in Lianyungang, East China's Jiangsu Province, recently closed down a restaurant reported by a customer who had "suspected that the bowl of noodles he had may contain opium as he was addicted to their flavor and always wanted to go back for more," a local newspaper reported on Sunday.
Yikes, poppy-spiked noodles with the ability to get you addicted? What the hell? Does it really work that way?

In 2020, a 75-year-old woman who claimed she did not know poppies were illegal was caught growing the plants and storing 4,104 poppy seeds at home. She was sentenced to five years in prison.
That's harsh punishment for growing poppy. But given China's history with opium, it is understandable.

Hmm. This makes me wonder. Are poppy seed bagels illegal in China then? Would the baking and trading of poppy seed bagels makes you liable to be jailed for 5 years by Chinese law?

Why is everyone so stirred up by this Australian-UK-US defence pact?
Seems like a simple rebranding and reorganizing of numerous existing agreements with some nuclear subs thrown on top.
To me it really seems like a net zero change in the strategic calculus.
1. Australia, US, UK all already made their intentions clear before.
2. All 3 are already aligned, Five Eyes, ANZAC, Quad, etc.
3. Why is the UK even relevant here? Almost seems like tacked on to make UK feel more important (The QE2 made it to the Pacific! -*GREAT*- Britain 4 Lyfe!!!!1111)
4. Nuclear subs would be based on US/UK tech, which PLA has been planning for already. So this would be basically the equivalent of planning for 6 or so more USN SSNs.
If anything, this seems like:
- Showing that the Five Eyes don't trust NZ much at the moment
- As people love to mention here, India is the junior-junior in their precious QUAD since they are announcing Indo-Pacific defense pact without Indo-people

I'd say it's relevant because it's an escalation of sorts, a hardening of positions. Morrison basically cemented Australia's anti-China stance, so that even after another administration comes in, their hands would be tied. This is unfortunate, for Australia.

It also means an end to any illusions of China-US relations going back to pre-Trump days.
