So far I feel both China and the US are under performing this year. With China you got them losing gold for weight lifting, men’s gymnastics, diving, and table tennis. With the US you got Simone Biles dropping out but more importantly it looks like the swimming team, while good, no longer dominates like they did in the Phelps-Lochte era.

In contrast Japan and Russia are over performing, especially Japan in newly introduced categories.
Two Japanese table tennis men are already out of the competition. China has high chance of sweeping gold and silver in mens table tennis. Hopefully China can do well in 3x3 womens basketball semi-final competition.

It'd be great if there were a medal for complaining, eh? But there's not, so you can stop going on about it now. Winners don't whine and whiners don't win. I love it when I hear adversaries complain about things being "unfair" or comparing thier situation to "loaded dice." They are mentally defeated and I tell them, "Yeah, life's so hard and unfair. You should quit."

There's nothing to complain about. Swimming and running are not over-represented; they are more competitive and more universal. If the US can take 28 out of 37 swimming medals, then there will be quotas to stop them. You complain that a single good runner or swimmer can win multiple medals, but the US complains that they have 1 swimmer who needs to go for broke 2-3 races in one day. You complain that there are too many distances in running and swimming while Americans complain that there are too many weight classes in weightlifting! How about we make basketball worth 14 gold medals with 7 height classes for each gender? Why are ping pong and badminton worth 5 golds each and basketball, water polo, soccer, field hockey, tennis, etc... worth 2 each? With all the doping (primarily in the Easter European block), weightlifting is lucky to still be an Olympic sport. Powerlifting and Strongman, both sports that are heavily Causasian, aren't even allowed in the Olympics because there's too much doping.

No more complaining; it is what sore losers do. Win or lose; accept it with grace and fight to become better.
It's one thing to complain using excuses, another to point out unfairness.

Athletics is not overrepresented but swimming absolutely is.

37 events using permutations of style and distance is ridiculous, especially because multiple athletes have proven they can get medals in multiple events. ie; the events are not specialised and different enough to warrant different medals. Swimming is the sport with the highest number of athletes getting multiple medals. Compared to say athletics or weightlifting, where its either practically or technically impossible for an athlete to get more than one medal.

Number of events should be decided based on whether it is a meaningful and practical division of specialisation. Swimming is not meaningfully specialised.

Even if China was the one owning the swimming tally I would still point out how overrepresented it is.

Wow. Calm down mate. I'm entitled to "complain". I'm just pointing out how unfair the system is. Its geared to western countries. I'll leave it at that, no more shall I speak of it. Happy now?

I agree. But the difference is China, once it lost those 6 golds yesterday will find it very hard to make it up

The US still has dozens of swimming events

Good for Russia though, nice to see them strong again

The US hasn't even gotten started on athletics (track and field)... and that has even MORE events than swimming.

Let's hope the African and Caribbean countries have more competitive athletes now lol. Just like the non-US Anglos who are stealing American medals in swimming, perhaps Black-majority countries can now start taking the medals they deserve from the minority coalitions that represent Anglos in the US/UK/AUS etc.

Yes, I would tend to agree with this. We just need to compare Usain Bolt with Michael Phelps to see how ludicrous the difference is.

Bolt won gold in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay.

In comparison, this is Phelps:

While I agree with @manqiangrexue's general sentiment that we should seek to improve ourselves instead of complaining about unfairness, I also have to agree that swimming is not fairly structured compared to other sports in the Olympics.

Not to mention every child gets a chance to run to see if he/she is genetically inclined to running. Not everyone especially in poor countries will ever get a chance to swim.

we can create more distance and sprint races.
WEll if its good enough to include rock climbing, they should Include novelty races/events like they have at summer fairs such as gumboot throwing, sack jumping, and skipping race to name a few.

Swimming is a rich people sport because of the infrastructure involved. Not like a dirt field where you can kick a soccer ball or run around.

As China becomes richer, it will naturally 'invade' more high-profile, influential, and popular sports like swimming. It will take time, maybe decade or two... But next generation will pay off, bigly.
