We hear about China's high speed rail network all the time, but what about freight rail?

Anyone knows how well developed the freight network is? In terms of connectivity to ports, international connections, integration with other forms of transport etc

Currently China lags behind the U.S. in terms of freight based rail. It is fairly tricky balancing passenger (pretty much negligible in the U.S.) with freight.

Food security. Must not rely on imported food for the populace

China's demand far outstrips domestic supply if everyone wants to eat well. There's not enough land to raise all those cows n pigs.

If anything, the Swine Fever has shown that you can't rely on domestic supply, better to have access to the world.

China is self-sufficient for grains. People may not eat well but they will not starve. Famines will cause revolutions in China.

In peace time. Yes. But in times of war, those supplies outside of China could be unreliable.
