Just out of curiosity, as I was reading 中华人民共和国行政区划 refence: (

It says 目前中国有34个省级行政区，包括23个省、5个自治区、4个直辖市、2个特别行政区, which reads to me like HK and Macau SARs are Provincial level administrative regions and as such, according to 海军舰艇命名条例 that Class 1 capital ships such as carriers are named after provincial level admin regions, there is a likelihood that we could see a 004 Hong Kong ship eventually. Correct me if I'm wrong in this interpretation.

You are right on the administrative level, but there are other factors to be considered in selection of names for PLAN capital ships. Examples - historical significance, political influence, cultural and economic contributions, past PLA/Red Army related events etc.

May be or may be not if you look deeper into contribution of inner Mongolia for the past 2000 years to current days.

Liaoning was chosen probably because it is the birth place of 001.

Shandong might be chosen according to many factors, among them is the province was a very important base for the Red Army during war with Imperial Japan.

Fujian also has a very significant Red Army struggle against the KMT and warlords before and during the WW2. It is also significant in today's Cross Straits Relationship and future AR of Taiwan.

Inner Mongolia vs Hongkong is debatable, but this is outside of this specific 004 thread, any lengthy discussion would derail the main topics.

A Macau carrier would be really funny though. After all, the Liaoning was originally bought to be a floating casino, so you could say its the Chinese carrier programme returning to its roots...

What it doesn't describe is how important this city is, and when it comes to naming ships, importance and symbolic value are paramount.

I'd say that any future carriers will be first named after costal provinces. The ones without ships assigned are Hainan, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Hebei, and Guangxi. If there are any more carriers beyond this, the PLAN will start going after the inland provinces and autonomous regions. My guess is that the province-level cities will be assigned to cruiser-sized vessels should China decide to go that route.

I don't think this is true at all. Hong Kong is more important to China than it was in 2019, and it's definitely in China's interests to treat everyone as one big happy family. Besides, Hong Kong is far enough back in line that it's possible that nothing will be named for it for the next 20 years. By then, I doubt many people will object to Hong Kong any more.

If PLAN expand the numbers of aircraft carrier, type 076 and type 075, we will be witnessing more provinces' name on these classes of ships. So far 8 or around a quarter of the eligible names have been allocated.

There is one slot for 004, and a few more if more procurement are added for type 076 and type 075. Good luck to all other provinces.

Yeah, inland provinces are more likely to get amphibious ships until the PLAN run out of names of coastal provinces. And you can strike out Hainan and Guangxi from the list of potential names. If 004 is the first nuclear carrier, I don't think that Guangdong is taken yet, so it should be a good pick.

If HKers want a ship named after it, start paying taxes to the central government for 70 years first
