It's interesting, basically for the period early 90's to early 2010's there was a big influx into western countries (primarily Canada, US, AUS, UK) of Chinese immigrants, first from HK, then mainland.
There was a lot of early backlash of "Chinese immigrants aren't assimilating, they have stores without English signs"
Then as the immigrants better acclimatized and economic conditions shifted both domestically and in mainland China, the backlash changed... "These Chinese are throwing money around, Foreign buyers (codeword for Chinese) are inflating property prices..."
Now as the economy has slowed (not only in China), (white) people are wondering where all the Chinese went

I might catch some hate for this here but if these snakes were being bred for TCM (most likely since they are poisonous and probably not being bred to sell to pet stores), hopefully this starts some kind initiative to push the government to educate people on how certain types of Chinese medicine, mainly the aspects that use fauna instead of flora, is mostly hokum and possibly harmful due to increased possibility of zoonotic transmissions in unhygenic environments and practices. This is one aspect of Chinese culture that should have been done away with as one of the "olds" during the cultural revolution. Again, I'm specifying animals and not plants or herbs. There very well be medical advancements that can by made by the unfortunate exploitation of animals and extracting things from them, but leave that to the (hopefully) contained, sterile and regulated practices that large pharmaceutical company labs can experiment with.
(Also wanted to add, since I'm already on my soapbox, I hope the government reforms the way smoking generates so much revenue for the state which dis-incentivizes the government from pushing people to stop smoking)
