India Contracts Fertilizer at Nearly Double Pre-War Price

India, the world’s top importer of urea, has booked the nitrogen-based fertilizer at sharply higher prices than in a previous tender as the Middle East conflict disrupts supplies and pushes global benchmarks higher.

Indian Potash Ltd., which imports the crop nutrient for the government, will secure 1.5 million tons for delivery on the west coast at $935 per ton, while another 1 million tons will be delivered on the east coast at $959 per ton, according to people familiar with the matter.

The offers are almost 90% higher than what India agreed to pay in a tender before the start of the conflict, said the people, who asked not to be named due to the commercial sensitivity of the information. Urea from the Middle East, a major supplier to the South Asian nation, was quoted at $490 a ton before the war began, according to Green Markets data.

A fertilizer ministry spokesperson did not immediately comment.

More than two dozen firms submitted offers last week, quoting rates between $935 and $1,136 a ton. This would be India’s first purchase since the US-Israel strikes on Iran and comes at a crucial period ahead of sowing for monsoon crops such as rice, corn and soybeans. The 2.5 million-ton tender, valid until April 23, was awarded late Wednesday, the people said.

India required that shipments avoid the Strait of Hormuz to reduce the risk of war-related disruptions to fertilizer supplies, the people said. The cargoes will be sourced from several countries, including Russia, Indonesia and Algeria, they said.

The South Asian nation’s urea production relies heavily on natural gas, much of it from the Middle East and used to make ammonia, a key feedstock for the fertilizer. Supply disruptions following the effective closure of the vital oil and gas shipping corridor forced some regional producers to

of nitrogen-based and phosphatic fertilizers.

Global urea prices have surged since the war began, with nearly 45% of global supply moving through the Persian Gulf, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Any prolonged disruptions could push prices even higher.

I know Ive been Indiaposting a lot but they've been taking a lot of Ls lately at national news level coz of Iran.

Since they keep yapping so much when things are supposedly good, I expect them to also take it when things are bad.

What is your obsession with India? Fertilizer prices in India? Who cares about India. China doesn't even see India as worthy of attention.

That old managed democracy trick.
Looking at Taiwanese news for the last few days they sure are spitting a lot of hot air on both sides about Lai's cancelled trip to Eswatini. You'll think Taiwan are used to getting the cold shoulder on the international stage by now. How come it's such a big deal this time?

Both DPP and anti-China westerners are far more extreme than they used to be and demand much more. They will not take any loss lying down. They will lash out in various ways.

Most likely action against those countries by the US. China will have to defend its friends.

Lower rates will pump up the stock market, and this is what trump wants.

Dollar devaluation here we come. The new inflation measuring tool by the next Fed Chair that make up inflation numbers. The big thing holding the approval of the next fed chair back was the politically charged criminal case against Powell. Now the republican committee member who blocked the next stage over it will back down.

The dependencies she is referring to Telecom infrastructure and using Chinese to do the work so skills are not transferred and says that Beijing approach is more long term as it create dependencies. Russia built 5G base stations and space internet. tech is always evolving it is not durable long term
She does not realize that Central Asia has high population growth and they are sending alot of students overseas. this population will multiply hence more energy and food dependencies.
I would think Russia will benefit more from this population growth as it is still educating them in Russian education system and more important Russia want Russian muslims influence them inside and outside Russia before they interact with non muslim Russians. That degree of separation. These things are not apparent but study of Soft Power give you this conclusion and this result of evolution of Islam differently over centuries.
