However, the negative connotations of the word seem to stem from actual historical events and it used to be pretty neutral; even useful as there wasn't an overall term for the country without referring to specific dynasties. Taiwan and South Korea don't have that kind of history with each other, so a rename just doesn't have any punch. Do any Koreans have any strong reactions about what Taiwan is doing? Do they even know it's happening?
If Japan started calling China as Shina (支那) again as they did in WW2 instead of Chugoku (中国), it would be considered deeply offensive and ethnic slur. It has deeply negative connotations and is associated with Japanese superiority , colonization, and imperialism during First and Second Sino-Japanese wars.
For Japan to call China as 中国 instead of 支那 is one of the practical outcomes of WW2.
