Even to this day, East Germany is still poorer than the west part and as a result is more resentful, xenophobic and votes hard right wing. A lot of them suffer from Ostalgie and feel angry they don't have things back in the good old days.

Imagine you were a doctor or an engineer one day, then overnight all your credentials were no longer recongized, becoming nothing more than surplus labour to be exploited by western companies. You'd be angry too.

I think it is just that Trump doesn't want to nation building, for obvious reason. If he made a deal with current Venezuela leader then it makes great sense to preserve the current power structure as long as they give him what he wants, namely the rights to Venezuelan oil fields and kick out Chinese investments.

I would guess even Maduro himself was willing to make such a deal, but Trump and Rubio probably had too much of a hate boner on the man, as you said these guys are petty as fuck.

In the long run I doubt they'll reap the benefit they imagined. Global oil price is on downward trend and Venezuelan oil is not the best quality stuff to begin with. Trump is just fixated on oil because he is a fucking dinosaur, renewable energy probably sounds gay to him.

This is just a desperate thief looking for easy target and Venezuela happens to be very easy. It doesn't stop the brainless MAGA proclaiming "Unipolar world is back hur dur" though. As if it is a great military achievement to extract a person when you've made a deal with the incumbent leaders LMAO

No with this action the most benefit is oil company not normal Americans and definitely not MAGA crowd. It not like oil company will product and sell oil with floor price or give free oil for them? To be quite honest, as someone who thinks China should be more interventionist, I don't think helping Venezuela would have been the right move. The government is the bottom of the barrel in terms of competency and corruption, even compared to places like Iran. China could have sent 1000 J-36's and it wouldn't have mattered because the military will just take American money and surrender.

Instead what China should be doing is ensuring that countries in its neighborhood are aligned with it, even if it requires force.

What if they take Chinese money and not surrender?

If their own people and government can't be bothered to properly manage their own sovereignty, why should China do the lifting for them? That doesn't seem fair now does it? I'm hearing rumors that Maduro's own circle sold him out which is why there was little resistance. Why should China help someone who isn't serious about helping themselves?

It isn't China's responsibility but it can hurt China in the longterm if US keeps eliminating countries from China's sphere of influence (or potential partners) one by one. That looks like the strategy.

I believe China is trying a strategy where it doesn't actually matter that much who actually is in charge. Unless they are 100% controlled vassal, they will still eventually warm up to China in the end. After all who is the new guy ultimately being responsible for? His own country and therefore his own interest. The US can try to say don't forget who your boss is but we need to remember most people who become leaders tend to have a pyscho personality and will always put his own interest first especially when that gives him power. And people care more about money than anything else. If China gives the guy a really good deal, he will start making all kinds of excuses to the US saying why he's doing it and isn't violating their friendship blah blah blah.

There are a lot of times I notice the new leader always talks tough on China at the start. But after say 1.5 years, he will always go, lets just be open minded and talk to china, no harm in trying right?

For some reason Russia can't do this as well and will demand much heavier loyalty. I guess they don't have the same economic clout as China which is what all countries really look for the most.

I was really hoping at least, the Chinese MSS could get some info on the invasion, that they would place agents around the city and at least look a few manpad missiles against the helicopters when they flew by

Imagine the cost to the US of they had lost even a few helicopters with SOF on board. That would have been easy pickings.
