You know which country wastes excessively time, energy and taxpayers dollars trying to rewrite its past and hope no one notices? India.

Old NameCurrent Official NameKey Foreign InfluenceYear Change
CalcuttaKolkataBritish (East India Company)2001
BombayMumbaiPortuguese (ceded to British)1995
MadrasChennaiBritish (Fort St. George)1996
CochinKochiPortuguese, Dutch, British1996 (city merger)
PondicherryPuducherryFrench2006

The more I read about India, the more I realize loads of "Indian" things have foreign origins. A lot being from the middle east (not necessary Islamic although that is the case for a lot) and british. For example Urdu and Hindi have loads of loan words. A lot of food, clothing and buildings have middle east style due to Mughal influence. Actually hell their government style has that influence since the guys in charge were sultans and later brits. The capital of Gujarat (Modi's home state) is called Ahmedabad and historically that has been a trading port between the Middle East and the South Asian continent. Congress party was founded by a brit and the the word Hindu itself comes from Persian.

If you didn't know this? Well its probably done on purpose. I mean those name changes are quite recent. There's a deliberate effort to downplay a lot of foreign stuff and claim it as Indian. And then you wonder why there's so much energy wasted between Hindus and Muslims because it turns out Islam has been in India for a long time and had a huge influence. You can't just ask its hundreds of millions to just go away and pretend it didn't happen. And denying their link to India, just makes things even more confusing.

Why am I talking about India again instead of China? Well I just wanted to give a case example of a country that is wasting loads of time trying to "destroy" or rewrite stuff about foreign influence in its country. Like will it work in the long term? Who knows? Maybe they will censor the internet so all of the above you will not know about in the future. But then that will mean a huge disconnect between the narrative and reality which will confuse people because things will eventually not add up. When you tell a lie, you need to cover it with more lies so eventually you have a heavy load trying to constantly hide. See Operation Sindoor for example.

And in the end its probably selective anyway. If India is truly serious, it should start by destroying the Taj Mahal right this instant to prove what a loyal Hindu nation it is.

Imagine how far ahead Huawei would be by now if they had an R&D campus that exhibited cultural confidence.

They even did the same thing for the Aryan Invasion theory, some historians in the west receive angry letters from Indians whenever you try to argue about the Aryan migration theory.

There is a clause that allows exemptions, and Skydio is expected to be given that exemption, but people wil buy a 10 year old Phantom 4 over a Skydio, so Skydio won't even get any business.

If they don't undo this law soon or hand out blanket exemptions, this will probably become one of the biggest industrial suicide in at least a decade. It's truly awe inspiring that all the headlines are treating this as a DJI problem when DJI and other Chinese companies are the only winners.
A few points
Skydio already has all the business. In fact, a backlog. Since individual states have already passed similar laws, Skydio exited the consumer business entirely and have been selling subscriptions to “drone services” to these states. They are rumoured to start at $25,000 per drone per year or something crazy.

I don’t think this will have a huge effect on too many things. Drones are just a value add. Something like aerial photography always existed. It’s just that drones made the cost trivial or greatly improved productivity (ie. a roof inspection could be done much quicker in many instances). Incidentally, probably the worst effects will be on public safety, you can look up the California wildfire response was greatly impacted by lack of access to DJI drones.

So Yasukuni Shrine tomorrow, take your bets on what Takaichi will do.
1. Visit herself in person
2. Not visit but send offering
3. Not visit but send Koizumi instead
2. Not visit

What will the cockroaches behind my fridge do tonight?

1. Bob heads
2. Clean each other's butt hairs
3. Scurry in circles
4. Nothing.

I don't care. They'll get what's coming. I originally thought that as a fellow Asian, the Japanese can be shown some leniency since Pax Sinica will be about a century after the last Japanese war crime against China, but with Takaichi's approval rating, Japan's on my permanent shit list like Canada after the Meng episode: my sushi consists of Mexican tuna, Scottish salmon with Chinese seafood soy sauce and Korean/Chinese wasabi. Old scores need to be settled with the provocations, and it looks like they can be baited into giving us the oppertunity when we're ready to collect.

I have a 2008 Honda that my mom gave to me because she didn't want it anymore but also didn't want to bother selling, a 2018 Camry my wife bought new, and a 2012 Sienna I got used 4 years ago when I was preparing for my first kid. They're all low mileage (70-85K) so they'll last us a long time. Our family's next China move oppertunity is my kids transition from high school to college so they won't last another 17 years but I'm not expecting the US to hang on long enough in the superpower race before someone like Newsom comes in and realizes that the US better import Chinese cars or end up driving relics while Africans and South Americans drive Huawei Maexstro and roll up to Americans like, "What are those!?"
