Myanmar/Burma civil conflict

Yunnan is still poor as hell and that's after all the money from the central government. Imagine the black hole of investment that Myanmar would be, on top of dealing with the unhappy locals. Development costs, education costs, infrastructure costs, security costs, all the costs would be through the roof. And for what, a port or two on the Indian Ocean? Terrible idea through and through.
True, but Yunnan is richer than most ASEAN countries, apart from Singapore, Brunei and Malaysia ... even richer than Indonesia by long shot

What exactly is "poor as hell"? I was in Kunming last year, and it looked like a pretty nice city to me.

Yeah all of these fantasy's about annexing Myanmar for a coast are just the lucid dreams of nationalist map painters (AKA me) as nice as it would look on a map and doing nationalist expansionary kanging its just an absolutely terrible cost-benefit ratio not even taking into account China's distaste for expansionary military operations either

If the Myanmar elites were smart, they would self-annex themselves into China by just declaring Myanmar an autonomous region of PRC, declare loyalty to the party, and pay taxes to Beijing. It's pretty obvious which way the global winds are blowing and it's better to be a part of a grand nation with a strong national security apparatus and nuclear arsenal. Better that than to be a weak and unstable state constantly subjected to foreign meddling. I am thinking of that democratic woman who was a Western darling for a very brief time. Is she in jail now or something?

That would mainly by the Bamar elites and maybe Rakhine. For the Karen it might be split with Buddhist Karen aka the majority joining China whiles Christians would be hostile. The Shan would most likely join if Xishuangbanna officials can persuade them. Chin, Kachin and other christians are 100% hostile to China because of Religion because they claim Christianity is part of their idenitity and are hostile to non Christians. Even though the Karen/Kayin it ironic because majority are buddhist and not Christian and the buddhist mostly sided with Tatmadaw or are neutral.
