Maybe it is more optimised for anti-personnel use, which would make no sense at HJ-12's dimension.

I believe one day launchers will replace most of rifle's role.

Some nice screen grabs of HJ-12. The first batch of images shows the JAP012 training round, which has the red and yellow stripes on the launch tube.

Just a thought,
The larger optic could be the search optic and once the target is identified and the system is 'locked' onto the target, the missile warhead could be providing the image to the Soldier. If this is the case then the firing sequence would/may include closing the search optic cover before launching the missile.
But I am a dumb tanker....

Could be, myself I'm very verse in ATGM system in general, I think the larger optic is the thermal/night vision system and while the pictures where during day or close enough it wasn't necessary to use it. Correct me if I am wrong.

Ahh, yes I agree that larger optic is the Thermal/Night Vision. The HJ12 is suppose to be lock-on before Launch weapon.
This is a demo and so far there are not to many reveals of what the operator sees in the sighting system.
