I don't think you can simply "clean" off rust unless they reapply the coating every now and then onboard which could be done but considering rust apparently don't really damage stealth characteristics that would kinda of just be a waste of money at the expense of terrible PR.

Why don’t they just apply rust directly instead?

Rust, by its very nature, is porous and prone to falling off. It will at the minimum cause issues with shaping.

Only part that contain iron is the radar aborbent coating.

US MIC bloated about the "baked in" radar aborbed material, that doesn't need repaiting.

Means rust could mean permanent damage to the radar absorbent material. At least if we go by the USA military interviews.

Of course there is a chance for that they lie. Or I misinterpret it.

From wiki :
The F-35 has a fibermat radar-absorbent material (RAM) baked into the skin, which is more durable, easier to work with, and faster to cure than older RAM

An F-35C has crash near NAS Lemoore in California. The pilot is said to have ejected.

Good to see the pilot is safe and damn, another plane this year lost to an incident, this is the 3rd now?

Really speaks about the state of American MIC when with all their budgets, personnel and time, they still couldn't fix this problem on their F-35 which pursued on for YEARS for SOME reason.
Which problems of the F35 are you referring? I am actually asking here,

Seems like China's 5th gen planes have a flawless record compared to a few crashes per year on US side. .
Single engine doesn't help. The lack of spare parts or replacement engines to make rotation before problems knock at the door is also a risk that is probably not tested with J-20 in China. Whwn you have about half the fleet awaiting repairs to be mission capable at all time, logistics seems to be one of the biggest factor of these crashes.
