Again, like with the recent photos of PLAAF J-16D leading a mixed formation of J-20 and J-35A, it is the EW variant J-15DT at the head of the PLANAF mixed formation of J-15T and J-35.

It seems PLA aviation across the board think highly of EW capabilities and its specialised fighter-based delivery platforms. Even moreso than later generation fighters. A small glimpse into their priorities and doctrine.

Or maybe its just because the EW variants are the most expensive airframes in each formation. It could always be the simpler reason.

The image of 3506 seems to have been AI altered though, the bay and gear doors look weird. But the image is legit right?

They definitely have a different nozzle design.

Why would they have different engines though, if that's the case? Maybe the ones on J-35 is more suitable for naval/carrier operation? Or since the J-35 is somewhat different aerodynamically or heavier? Because if it's some other consideration I don't see why it isn't standardized between the J-35A and J-35.

It is so different in fact, that i am a bit inclined towards thinking that WS-19 is in higher class, like F414 to F404 (which will make J-35 to J-35A relationship resembe one between F-18E and classic F-18C). It's certainly much heavier.

The nozzle is indeed far too different, and simulnateous appearence with WS-21 can't be just a coincidence. Original thinking was that WS-21 is a half-step in-between, but it increasingly seems that it's just an engine for a substantially different, lighter aircraft.
