In the comments section of cute orca, some people said that they can look forward to the scramjet hypersonic cruise missile in the parade, but cute orca reply that if it is not displayed, they just have to wait for the 80th anniversary of the founding (After all, this time the military parade clearly stated that all the equipment involved was in service.)

So HCM project obviously exists and is progressing, but it does not seem to be in a hurry/readiness to be put into service and displayed.

There was chatter last year following Khalid bin Salman's visit to Beijing that the Saudis reached a tentative deal with China for hypersonic missiles with some degree of ToT, or at least things were steadily progressing in that direction.

If a new hypersonic scramjet cruise missile has entered PLARF service, or will do so soon, then there's a not unreasonable chance that there might be substance to such rumors.

Not trying to get our Pakistani brothers too excited, but everyone knew Chinese hypersonic missile technologies would proliferate, sooner or later, when the DF-17 made its public debut on October 1, 2019.

Northwestern Polytechnical University has successfully tested its Feitian-2 RBCC (kerosene/hydrogen rocket + ramket) hypersonic vehicle.

On June 23, 2025, the Feitian-2 vehicle developed by Northwestern Polytechnical University successfully conducted a test flight from a location in northwestern China. For the first time in history, the team collected performance data on variable-structure intake, variable-thrust acceleration, and variable angle-of-attack autonomous flight of the kerosene/hydrogen rocket and ramjet combined propulsion.

The information revealed in the video shocked me!!!

  1. The vehicle operates at altitudes between 30–100 km (details below)!!!
  2. Its endurance exceeds 6 hours!!!
  3. The video's conclusion suggests that the uploader personally witnessed the first test flight of a new spacecraft. With declassification now possible, a major milestone for this mysterious new vehicle (distinct from the Feitian No.2 spaceplane) is expected later this year.
After discussing this in an aerospace group (filled with professionals), the potential details I heard are astounding!
This vehicle is designed as an air-breathing skip-glide vehicle with intermittent multi-cycle ignition:

  • At 30 km altitude, it ignites air-breathing engines to accelerate, then shuts down.
  • It enters a skip-glide trajectory, reaching an apogee of 100 km before descending.
  • Upon dropping back to 30 km, it reignites engines to repeat the energy-replenishing glide cycle.
This process enables 6-hour endurance – such extreme duration implies a near-space, air-breathing hypersonic vehicle with global-range capability potentially exceeding one full Earth orbit.

Of course, full success has yet to be achieved...

Even at an average speed of Mach 10 which is low for a skip glide vehicle spending lots of time near the Karman line, that is roughly 12,350km/hr average speed. Given a general straight line circumference of the Earth is approx 41,275 adjusted for a duration of flight at >99km altitude, a six hour flight is already more than one shortest distance circumnavigation of earth.

In reality, such a vehicle, like the hypersonic vehicle test flown in 21/22, the average speed would be well above mach 10. This would suggest at least a 2x circumnavigation "range".

Lets keep in mind this is a public university project. Affiliated with defence or not, PLA's own HGVs are leagues above this and only mentioned by US intelligence until their replacements are ready. At this point, China is clowning the US at hypersonics including powered hypersonic flight. India is still boasting about achieving scramjet combustion.

Currently, Wang Yanan from aviation magazines and military expert Du Wenlong have both mentioned this "6-hour" data in related videos.
According to information from aerospace groups, this "6-hour endurance capability" is official data provided by a university research team, but no publicly available text has been seen.
