It has been discussed that S-400 are upgraded modernized S-300. And per Russian doctrine that S-400 is to be supplemented by S-300 batteries for best effect. S-500 are again upgraded S-400 system with more ABM capabilities. Correct me if im wrong.
If that is so why not, you know, just supplement S-400 with more S-400 batteries?

I think the Russians just decided that S-300 is good enough system for majority of things so even if S-400 is available they are still gonna keep using S-300 they already have.

Cost. Similarly PLA supplement HQ9B batteries with HQ22. I think S-300 in Russian services will be gradually replaced by S-350.

First part is right - S-400 is direct evolution of S-300(S-300PMU2), but replacing old with modern components, plus far more up to date, adaptable and flexible.
This is part of the reason it's performance under stressing scenarios can vary so greatly - it's a constructor, and always was meant to be.

Second is not: S-500, together with S-350, is a new generation of systems.
S-500 can use components of S-400, but this is backwards compatibility.

Anyone interested in a good laugh this moring ...

and even more so in the reply section from here on:

In our childhood in mid eighties we used to fly paper kites as childeren in urban areas of Punjab, which would need constant repair and upkeep, for repair bondo we used to hit the pantry and take out handful of flour, throw it in the pan with water, cook it for couple of minutes, that's how we used to paste the long strips of paper on our kites, least skillful of us had the most strips, that last picture of Tejas MK2 reminds me of that bygone era.
