Didn't Jiang Zemin order a 747 from the US as China's equivalent to Air Force One, and the plane was so riddled with bugs that it basically was rendered inoperable?

I'm getting the exact same vibes 20 years later.

A 767, rather. Can't imagine China ever ordering a Boeing jet for official purposes ever again.
I mean, there's also the part where China basically spent the price of two planes to obtain a motherload of CIA listening tech for study.

There are also more Chinese-Australian MPs in the new parliament. Sally Sitou, Gabriel Ng, Sam Lim, etc. Shit maybe I should join the ALP as well. At least us wumaos in Australia won't be going camping anytime soon.

I'd rather see Comrade Gordon Chang revert back to his usual prattle of the impending Chinese collapse. It feels too much like a reverse jinx.
Oh well, good for survival of the nation at the expense of the USA but really if the USA cannot lead the world to a brighter future, well the world will choose the next best candidate for such a path. The USA had its chance, could not overcome its neo colonial past and hence should do the world a favor and drop out of the lime light with some dignity or if they cannot do that, don’t complain when they are dragged out by force

Penny Wong got all the politically correct buff possible. Let's see:

- She's a woman
- She's half-Asian (Malaysian Chinese from her father, English from her mother)
- She's a lesbian (came out in 2002, married her wife in 2024)
- She's a Christian (attends Uniting Church)

She's just Chinese enough and just white enough to not upset anyone, really.

Those characteristics may have aided Wong's rise within the Labor party, but they don't count for anything with the kinds of folks I was concerned about, i.e. the closet and not-so-closet racists who dream of a world before we were "swamped by Asians" (recall that the woman who said this is still in Parliament). Barack Obama was adored by many in part because of the symbolism that he brought to the table. The other half of the country lost their minds about him for precisely the same reasons: he represented everything they feared and despised about modern America.

In any case, she's looking great in red today:
