Chinese pop culture is making more and more inroads in SEA.
In this context Singapore's ISEAS conducted another poll on SEA's sentiment with respect to China and unlike last year where China came out as the preferred partner over the US, this year the US came back on top.
My two cents is that one would've thought Trump's election would've swayed public opinion in ASEAN more towards China, but instead they perhaps see Trump's erratic policy making as an opportunity to better play the US off of China. Oh well, smaller countries will do what they must in order to leverage their strategic position, what matters is for China to continue playing ball to firm up its own position.
Other indicators in the poll are more positive. For example, just as many respondents rank China and SK as equally desireable travel destinations, eventhough SK is the far bigger exporter of pop culture. And above all, most respondents still say that regardless of preferences, China is the region's most influential power. Overall, with strong fundamentals and the leadership having made the right calls in which areas to focus in, China's influence and public perception will only continue to grow, especially as Trump dismantles the last vestiges of American influence on the planet.
