It's likely that this make the most financial sense for ByteDance.
TikTok minus the US might be worth more to ByteDance long term than what anyone is willing to pay in a forced sale of TikTok plus the US.
US teens will lose interest quickly if VPN is required.
Besides, once it's banned in the USA, ad revenue from US companies will dry up instantly, as I imagine the ban will apply to advertising on TT.
Without ad revenue, the business model is dead even if US users keep using it via VPN.
Without US content creators, the rest of the world would slowly lose interest too and TT will eventually die off.

Beijing has already said a sale is not allowed, so of course Bytedance will not sell.
The rationale behind the ban is the fragility of the much vaunted US soft power where it is discovering that it can no longer effectively brainwash its population if there is even one channel open for them to get the truth. As such I think the US will not seek to go after TikTok globally, as its prime objective is to remove this main pipeline of truth to its population, so there is no need to make the fight harder for itself. At least not initially.
Besides, as soon as the ban comes into force, there will be a flood of Huawei phones preloaded with TikTok going into the US, so Bytedance might not actually see much of a reduction once the dust has settled.
Can the Chinese market replace the Western market for SK companies? My guess is no, so SK will understandably toe the line of Washington, while trying not to upset China too much, a tough balancing act indeed.

SK companies are not competitive anyway. They are being displaced rapidly.

What? You're just learning this now? Heck, the majority of people in the current Biden administration are all mostly of that heritage/ethnic/religious background. There was a photo with the star of David on the background showing almost all members of the high ranking administration officials belonging in that group that I won't post as it'll be interpreted regardless of context as anti-semitic and I am just not going to go that route.
In my opinion, they're honestly one of the groups of people that can never be questioned as to where their loyalties lie unlike that of say Chinese ethnic origin where a single phone call, email, personal conversation with somebody from the mainland no matter how specious the connection you can automatically be tagged as "CCP SPY" and traitor to your country. Which is also why key posts in the state dept and others don't go to people with Chinese/Asian backgrounds. There was a person of Asian who hails from New Jersey of Asian origin that detailed this complaint sometime ago.
