Found this on Rybar. Personally I think China should do better at making sure these kind of map mishaps do no occur. It does make some countries lose faith in china. I don't mind incorporating the disputed territories with India but the line was demarcated with Russia over a decade ago. It should be properly addressed. Any thoughts?
The Russian
and
are actively spreading the news that
China claims the territory of the Russian Federation . The bottom line is that recently,
officially approved maps of the country were issued in one of the government departments of the PRC - they include China's Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin, disputed by India, Taiwan, as well as the entire
Big Ussuri Island , the eastern part of which belongs to Russia .
Indeed, since the days of the Russian Empire, the parties
have been arguing over the islands on the Amur River. However, in 2004, Russian President
Vladimir Putin and former Chinese leader
Jiang Zemin entered into an agreement on the transfer of the western part of the Big Ussuri Island, as well as some other territories, to the PRC. The eastern part of the island officially became Russian.
The theme of belonging to the islands on the Amur River, as well as some other territories of the Russian Federation,
has been spreading in China for a long time . This year, for example, China's Ministry of Natural Resources
toponymy rules for maps, according to which cities that once belonged to the country must have their names changed.
into traditional Chinese .
And in the Baidu maps cartographic service, the Chinese border also covers the entire Big Ussuri Island.
In addition,
the Aigun and
Beijing treaties , concluded during the existence of the Qing and Russian empires and marking the borders of the two countries, are considered by many in China to be
“unequal” by analogy with the agreements that the country was forced to sign with
Great Britain and other European powers as a result of opium wars.
Despite the fact that it is not the first time that the Chinese authorities have used such informational occasions to stimulate patriotic feelings among the domestic consumer, unlike the aggressive
of Japan, what is happening
so far is not a real claim on the territory of Russia.
But the fact remains that the territorial dispute officially ended with the demarcation of borders in 2008, and the fact that China still publishes such maps at
the state level does not quite fit with the rhetoric about strong friendship between the Russian Federation and China.
So far, the only official comment from the Russian authorities is
of the Chairman of the International Committee of the Federation Council
Grigory Karasin, who stated that it is not necessary to draw premature conclusions for the time being. It remains to wait for the statements
of the Russian Foreign Ministry - maybe they will shed light on this, to put it mildly, ambiguous situation.
