My visit to US Naval Base Coronado (NBC), Cornado Is. near San Diego (many pics)

Over the weekend begininng Saturday, April 7th, 2012, myself and my wife were down in southern California, in San Diego. We were there for my daughter's wedding on Monday, April 9th, in Coronado, California on the beach at the Hotel del Coronado.
Beautiful setting, but also the home of the Naval Base Coranado and a lot of the Amphibios Warfare Command on the West Coast. Across the strait was the anchorage for many of the vessels.

We took some time to visit and photograph the vessesl we could see, and there were a lot of them, a real delight for any naval enthusiast.

First of all, off the coast of the island, either doing exercises, or standing as an ABM sentinel, we immediately saw an Arleigh Burke Class AEGIS Destroyer. She was very well defined with very sleek lines and very squared away. This was a Flight IIA Burke, with the full helicopter hangar on the aft end.

While we were watching and photographing these vessels a US Marine Sea Hawk helicopter flew over and I got a picture of it. There were numerous helo overflights throughout the times we were there.

Across the strait were the anchorages for many ships of the US 3rd Fleet. I tried to get pictures of as many as I could:

Driving across the Coronado Bridge, we were treated to a close up view of a new, San Antonio Class LPD undergoing maintenance while docked there. This is the USS Green Bay, LPD-20.

All along the line were more Burke destroyers, a Tconderoga Class Cruiser, another Wasp Class and other support vessels.

US NAVY WASP CLASS LHD, USS KEARSARGE, LHD-3 & ANOTHER BURKE DDG

THREE MORE BURKE CLASS DESTROYERS AT DOCK

ANOTHER OVERFLIGHT, THIS TIME A US NAVY SH-60 SEA HAWK

US NAVY TCONDEROGA CLASS CRUISER & ANOTHER BURKE CLASS DDG

    [b]
US NAVY SUPPORT AND LOGISTICAL SUPPLY VESSELS & ANOTHER BURKE DDG

On the beach, during the wedding ceremony, we had another SH-60 helicopter overflight.

    FINAL US NAVY SH-60 OVERFLIGHT

We counted seven Burke Class DDGs, One Ticonderoga Class CG, two Wasp Class LHDs, one San Antonio Class LPD, one Hospital Ship and two support vessels. Pretty good assemblage of vessels right there.

All in all it was a very enjoyable time, principally of course because of the wonderful wedding ceremony for our daughter (I have five kids, three daughters and two sons, this wedding now has all three daughters wed, and our oldest son is also married. We have eight grandkids so far, and are expecting more). But also as an opportunity to see, enjoy, photograph and contemplate the strong amphibious capabilities of the US 3rd fleet that are located in San Diego, California on the west coast of the United States.

Thanks...it was a great trip and an awesome display of that part of the US 3rd Fleet...not to mention the 7th fleet forward deployed to Japan.

And, for everyone replying, just simply reply to the thread, replying with a quote, unless you do a lot of editing, like popeye said will simply repost all of those pictures.

    Excellent thread Jeff

I lived in San Diego from 1977 untill 2004. Much of that time(77-91) I was on active duty with the USN. I was stationed at NAS North Island..ie Coronado before BRAC..BRAC in their genius consolidated Naval Amphibious Base Coronado and NAS North Island into Naval Station Coronado.

I was stationed with three major commands at NASNI.. HSL-31, VS-33 & HC-11 over a seven year period. All of those commands are now decommissioned. HLS-31 hangar stands empty...HC-11 hangar is now home to the west coast HSC squadrons. And I do not know what the USN has in store for the VS squadron hangars. They should move the E-2s back to San Diego..They'd get better support there.

Coronado functions as home to US Navy SEALs main training facility and home for the West Coast Navy SEALs.

Jeez, Popeye, I was right in your Navy Home Town and neck of the woods. You had a very long service there in the San Diego area...but there was plenty of commands and opportunity for it.

Unfortunately with the wedding and all, and having to get back to work, I did not get to visit the Midway.

We intend to take another trip down just for that sometime and I look forward to it.

As always, my friend, thank you for your service and the ewealth of knowledge and experience you bring to this forum (and many others as well).

Gorgeous set of photos, Jeff. And those weren't even of the beach!

I remember the first (Canadian) warship (old USN DDH-equivalent) I ever set foot on, decades ago. It seemed huge at the time (now it's an artificial reef off Vancouver Island). Pipsqueak compared to these monsters.

Remember building a huge model of the Midway when I was a kid. Loved it!

I have other pics opf the beach for my daughter's wedding...but really wanted to share these here.

The anchorage here was great...there were two carrier in on the north side of the island but I was not able to get over there while there last weekend.

There's enough for a Naval enthusiast to easily spend an entire week around San Diego.

I am just finishing the entire air wing for my PLAN Carrier and should post some new pics this week. It has taken almost as long to build, paint, detail, and add the tiny decals to these aircraft as it took to build the entire carrier...but it is going to look good.

I will also end up having some carrier deck equipment (tow bars, push vehicles, forklifts, cranes, etc. And ultimately several dozen 1/350 scale crew all painted up. That will take some time too but will add a lot to the realism of the model.

Those are some great pictures. Quite a sight to behold. The collection of ships at that single naval base are probably more capable than most countries' navies today.

Yes, when you consider that there are seven Burke DDGs shown, one Ticonderoga CG, two Wasp LHDs, one San Antonio LPD, two supply/supoort vessels, and two full blown nuclear carriers on the other end of the island that I did not get to photograph along with several escorts vessels there...what existed right around Cornado Naval Base on April 8-9, 2012 is certainly more powerful than most nations of the world, and probably the equal to almost any other nation.

If all of those vessels were involved in a task force that was tasked with militarily confronting any other navy in terms of a surface action engagement with carriers, I do not believe any other nation could previal over that part of the US 3rd Fleet.

It was an awesome sight, and a lot of "eye candy" for any Naval enthusiast like myself.

We plan on making a seperate trip down to SD later this summer specifically for that purpose.

Heard a lot of good about the tour and all that is there to be seen. We plan on making a day of it at the Midway, and then another day on the north end of Coronado Island to take in the carriers in port.

Lots of Navu "eye candy" around San Diego.

Lots up around Bremerton Washington too!

I keep wondering why people like to use decommissioned vessels and tanks for artificial reef. I understand that these things are useless after decommission but they are still huge amount of steel. Isn't this material scarce?

It is actually cheaper than trying to go through the process of having somone scrap them...and it serves a useful ecological function.

I was so busy looking at the pictures I missed this..

Yea.. what you saw when crossing the Coronado Bridge was Naval Station San Diego. AKA "32nd Street". That's where all the surface warfare ships and amphibs are homeported. At the Naval base in Coronado(NAS North Island) the only ships homeported their are the...Ronald Reagan and Carl Vinson. .

Yep, most of the pictures of the ships were of those dockside across the way. I did not get to the north end of the island to see the carriers, other than seeing their masts and partils as we came over the bridge. That's have to be another trip when we go see the Midway too.

The one Burke offshor on the OCean side was a Burker Flight IIA class and she was either just doing some exercises, or was actually doing the ABM thing. We are stationing vessels off the west coast and over off of Japan for ABM duties now.
