I think there is confusion nick-name for the tank, the Type 96A is equipped with a rear cage armor to protect against RPGs

Type 96g does not use cage armor, Instead it can be used composite armor. Front of the Type 96A and Type 96g also design differences. Type 96A is not equipped with explosive reactive armor ERA

Type 96A portion turret designed boxy than the Type 96A, turret Type 96 / 96A still influenced somewhat of T-72. Improved optical viewfinder larger machines, can be equipped with a system similar Shtora Russian or version Chinese.

What you call the Type 96A is known just as the Type 96. What you call the Type 96G is just known as the Type 96A.

Ok, so the ZTZ-96A at the Tank Biathlon is not the same tank as the one in the 2009 parade.

Speaking of the ZTZ-99, I always found the "ZTZ-99 is based on the T-72" claim a bit odd, since the ZTZ-99's road wheel arrangement looked more like that on the T-80s (thought the ZTZ-99A changed to one like the T-72/T-90, ironically enough).

There are some things hard to understand here. Some sources said that the Type 96 was originally called Type 85-III , some say the Type 88C was the original name of the Type 96

according to globalsecurity.org: A variant, the Type 85-III with an upgraded 1,000 hp diesel engine was introduced in 1995. Though primarily designed for export, the Type 85-III was further developed following design finalization in 1997 into the Type 96 series. This tank was also sometimes referred to as Type 88C

ZTZ-99 (Type 98g) are easily identifiable, it has the longest chassis and turret than ZTZ-85/90 / 88C / 96/98
ZTZ-99 have larger dimensions ZTZ-96

The ERA can be added on top of the cage and on top of the turret and chassis with minor work, ERA is not an integral part of the tank and really is not enough not qualify a tank to be a different model. The optics looks different in those two pictures but once again I don't know if that difference alone, or even with the ERA, would constitute a different model. Perhaps there are additional internal differences we are not aware of.

The "type 96g" is the same tank as the type 96A.

The "type 99a2" does not exist, there does exist a type 99A, but it is not the tank posted, which was merely a modified Type 99 with what looked like additional ERA.

It does exist. First, this pic can show the difference between 99 and 99A. 99 has a turret of 98, and 99A has a new turret.

And then, this is 99A2. You can see it has another kind of turret, which is more "western", and an improved chassis.
By the way, anybody see the white paper on the turret? It covers a red sticker, "超限超重", means that this tank is too huge and heavy for railway . PLA soldiers never peel away the stickers, or just cover it.
You can also find that 99, 99A and 99A2 have different kind of laser devices.

What you call the Type 99A2 is referred to officially as the Type 99A (or ZTZ99A, if we're being pedantic).

What you call the Type 99 and Type 99A, are the same except for the slight modification in forward turret and rear turret armour, but as far as I am aware, they are both referred to as ZTZ99.

It makes sense that the Type 99A (what you call the Type 99A2) is the only official other variant of Type 99, considering its vastly different turret, optics package, not to mention engine, whereas the various Type 99 "variants" only feature modified turret add ons (what you call Type 99 and Type 99A), so are not really worthy of a true variant designation.

It doesn't help things that wikipedia lists Type 99, Type99G, Type 99A, and Type 99A2, which sends people off the wrong track. In terms of meaningful mass production of meaningfully different variants, only the Type 99 "basic" and the Type 99A (with the new turret, APS, engine) are generally considered.

U R RIGHT.HERE IS A LIST.
Obj 9910=Type 98
ZTZ99=Type 99
ZTZ99 mod1(ERA)=Type 99G
ZTZ99 mod2(new turret)=Type 99A1
ZTZ99A=Type 99A2

That should be clear.

ofc type 99a2 exist:)Here comes the beast,biggest difference is implementation of new turret equipped with a millimeter-wave radar protection system,maybe stronger engine around 1800hp and new type of explosive reactive armor..In combat, navigation, night observation systems, has been well strengthened. Not only to maintain the original "active / passive" process defense system. It also adds some new system developed by the PLA.
