Having C-17 side by side with the Y-20, one can really see the difference and design philosophy.
For example, the Soloviev D-30KP-2 on the Y-20 is much smaller in diameter compare to Pratt & Whitney F117-PW-100 on C-17 - the F-117 is both wider in diameter but shorter in length; the Y-20 has a much bigger hump on the top side (and not as smooth transition) compare to C-17 making C-17 having a flatter profile; the nose cone of Y-20 is shaped more like a "bird's beak" pointing downwards than C-17's centerline approach; and then there is the obvious winglets that's missing from the Y-20.

I am sorry... but... of course there are differences in the design of Y-20 and C-17, they are different aircraft altogether and from different nation. Another thing is... the D-20KP-2 is not the final engine that Y-20 is going to be equipped in. Secondly... the Y-20 is still not in the final production status and so there might still be changes here and there.

And... in future, if the new engines that are to be fitted to Y-20, had wider diameter and shorter in length (closer to the dimensions of the US F-117) then the Y-20 would have closer design philosophy to the C-17?

So... in the end... your meaning for different design philosophy is just 'spot-the-different' in the aircraft appearance?

In the end... the Y-20 is a very different aircraft as the C-17, it is not even accurate to discuss design philosophy here. It is like saying F-15 had a different design philosophy to the Su-27... well... of course.

C-17 was designed with transporting M1 Abraham tank and other heavy equipment to every corner of the world where needed by the US military, thus its dimension and flight range has to be able to meet the requirements.

Y-20 was designed for transportation of Type 99 and similar heavy equipment within the boundry of China, and may be to some neigbouring countries to deliver disaster relief or export of military equipment. Remember that China has no overseas military base and no desire to intervent in far away lands.

Can someone help with second (well, that one that seemingly became CFTE bort number 783) Y-20 maiden flight date? Hui Tong has December 16, 2013 - and first photos (video screenshots, actually) have appeared the same date, but other sources say it was on December 14... :/

The second question that tortures me is why if 002 presumably is static test article, and 003 is second flight test article, CFTE decided to skip one digit in a series anyway (781-783).

Of course, history knows many examples of STA becoming FTA with time...may be this is an answer.

C-17 is actually too big with capacity that is rarely used, and there was a plan to narrow the fuselage. So, Y-20 actually has the right size.
